Mapping Glyphs

:? When you say the glyph is not saved, is it not in the font file when you reopen it in Font Creator? Or is it just not showing when you test the font? You cannot drag and drop a glyph from one character position to another, but you can cut and paste it. To copy font metrics (side-bearings ...

Generating Contours from a Bitmap

If you are using the lite version of the program you will not have the option to import an image. With the full version, you can import a bitmap into a glyph (from the tools menu) and generate contours from the image (autotrace it to convert the bitmap to a vector). This saves a lot of drawing, sinc...

Links for Typography and Design Standards

Either in the Help File or on this site we need a source of reliable official information on Type Design Standards and Specifications. Below are a few links I have found useful. I will update this list from time to time. I don't need links to yet more freeware font sites, but if you know of a link t...

Testing Combining Diacritics

:) Thanks for that tip. Also very useful to test the position of combining diacritical marks. I tested my font in WordPad as you suggested and quickly saw which characters needed some adjustment. Since one has to close the Font Test window to edit the font again, I did screen grab and kept th...

Unicode Semantics 1.0

OK nobody can answer my question, so I'll try to answer it myself. I installed a font with only Macintosh and Microsoft Unicode mappings. Extended characters were replaced with the default character box in OpenOffice 1.0. After I added the Unicode 1.0 Semantics mapping the font seems to work just fi...

Copying and Pasting Mapping Data

I understand the problem you are having, and think I have found an easy solution. Erwin's explanation was perhaps too brief, so I will explain in detail. This is what I did, and it seems to work. I opened one font that had mapping data for Unicode Semantics 1.0 and another that did not. The ...

Font Creater is Best on the PC

If you use a PC, then Font Creator is excellent. If you want to create fonts for use on the MAC, better use a MAC. There is a shareware program called Crossfont (and others no doubt) that will convert TTF files to the MAC platform. Just out of curiosity, I downloaded it, and converted both ways with...

Strike out before you type it.

 You could try typing the stroke before the letter to be struck out. Position the character to the RIGHT of the origin, but still use zero advance width. I had a similar problem with using combining diacritical marks with different width characters. Only problem is people would not expect to t...

Diagonal Guidelines

 Draw a contour with just four points:- a slash with a triangle at the bottom. Then you can select it by clicking on the triangle at the bottom (or at the top if you prefer).

Horses for Courses

:? It depends what kind of font you want to create. Most fonts have smooth outlines with smooth curves and straight lines, but not everyone wants the machine-cut look. Some typefaces have rough outlines to make them look hand-drawn. Handwritten fonts also have irregular outlines. Many people scan ha...

Panose Information

:?: Some fonts contain Panose information, which may help with font substitution. Is it worth putting this in? It seems to be a complex subject of limited value. What is the minimum that one would need to add?

Platforms

The fonts that I am editing have three platform: Macintosh, Microsoft Unicode, and Unicode 1.0 Semantics.

:?: The help file says I should keep the first since many programs use it, but can I delete the Unicode 1.0 Semantics platform? It would save me a lot of work. Which programs need it?

Character mapping/keystrokes

Sounds to me like you need a keyboard macro program.
Try keyboard pro. Then you can enter any character with a single shortcut key or a pair of keystrokes e.g. ~b

Rotating Glyphs - Big Tryout

In the glyph edit window, click the glyph that you want to rotate to select it.
Click it again to get the rotation handles at the corners. Then drag to rotate.
Double-clicking goes into point edit mode.
