Floral Ornaments

Post by Dick Pape »

Thought I'd drop these here fyi.

Of course all 10 fonts were constructed with FC.

I learned about drag and drop using bmp images. The worst part of having lots of detail on the input is how long it takes to form the new glyphs. Once created it was still necessary to fine tune alignment, sizes and "enhance" missing lines. That cosmetic stuff of course takes a long time also.

I have a relatively fast computer, but each glyph took perhaps 30-60 minutes to complete. This has given me an incentive to upgrade --- thanks Erwin.

This is the exercise from which I discovered the absolute maximum point size for fonts is 32,768. As a couple of glyphs were larger, I included them just so you could see!

I downloaded and installed Floral Motifs-Containers, Floral Motifs Mums and Suns, and Floral Motifs-Ornaments. After that, the download site wanted some money from me. You could send your files to Erwin, and he will host them for you.

The artwork is beautiful, but I had real problems displaying the fonts or doing much with them. I tried in different programs, but none could cope very well. As soon as I try to zoom in or resize artistic text, etc., my PC slows to a crawl or fails to display the more complex glyphs. I have the same problem in FontCreator or MainType. To view one glyph (with validation off) takes 5 seconds or more. Task switching takes several seconds when a complex glyph is displayed (2,714 contours and 23,553 points)

My PC is not the most powerful, but it is a modern PC — AMD64 3500Ghz with 1 Gbyte of RAM and onboard nVidea graphics.

The fonts are not very practical as they are. I would say that 1,000 contours and 10,000 points is close to the upper limit of what is practical for any single glyph. I think that the complex motifs would be better as high resolution bitmaps or perhaps as vector images. I tried converting one to curves in PagePlus, but it didn't seem to work. Export at 300 dpi PNG worked, but at 600 dpi it did not.

Gotcha! This was a not too subtle push to get you to upgrade your hardware some more (I'm a secret agent from Intel)... and a way to prove to my wife I need to upgrade also. Thanks for trying them.

(Sorry about the Rapidshare business but you know the limits on some of these free hosts... I've had list after list of such services which seem to come and go too frequently.)

If you think you have problems just reading them try to import and edit them!!

You are right of course that there is a practical limit to the usability of glyphs this large. I've used them in word documents so that part of font creation works.

Some of the larger ones I'm working on don't have any more details than smaller ones, but are composed of thousands of short lines (4-point rectangles) that make up a shaded area. The one I mentioned some time ago which illustrated the 32k max point size was two men smoking where the smoke was 30k points... and it was a silhouette image to begin with.

In fact, I have a glyph of a Lithuanian folk dancer woman which is 5691 contours and 63,147 points. And it's just one person in some long dress with a head scarf! It's just too large to even edit -- but fun for a gallery of oddities...

I've learned to work around these problems by having a card game going at the same time -- that works while the cpu is chugging along at 100%. I go out , cook meals, wash dishes and shine my shoes while waiting for some of them to finish.

In my mind, sure beats trying to reduce the number of points in the letter A... hah Dick

BSOD

Post by Dick Pape »

Now some months later, I've learned that FontLab can't read fonts which have glyphs larger than 32k points. Gives you a BSOD and can't complete. When the characters are removed everything's fine -- mapping has nothing to do with it as you might guess.

Another reason to buy FontCreator!

emmm, question:
with FontCreator you can create any type of font or are there any limitations?

Typical fantastic fonts Dick!

Elizabeth, depends on what you mean by
any type of font . . .

Yes, any kind of MODERN font; True Type, Open Type (after jumping through some hoops), serif, sans serif, ornamented, pictorial, symbol.

No to old (pre 1990) platform fonts with incompatible abandoned ideas on how to make fonts.
AND no to multi colored fonts. Those have to be further enhanced with some kind of drawing program.

No to Type 1. No to Fons. No to TTC. No to WOFF. Yes to what Dave said.
