Cankama - An OpenType Gothic Font

My latest font includes several OpenType features including Petite Caps and Ligatures. This is the first to include a feature for fractions. If the user types 1/2 with this feature enabled it will change to ½ automatically. You will need an application that supports OpenType features (e.g. InDesign) to use this feature, but any of the glyphs can be inserted from a character map.

The font also includes Initial forms, ordinals, historical ligatures, ornaments, alternative fractions (stacking fractions), and stylistic sets.

1. Download: Association for Insight Meditation Page Not Found?

2. If you type 1/2, 1/4, 3/4 in MS Word it converts them for you... (Word is cheaper than Indesign) Any font apparently.

Thanks. Fixed the link now.

I doubt if Word does the same thing as OpenType does. Compare the result of 1/4 with ¼ at 72 point and post a screen shot. I suspect that Word is superscripting/subscripting the numerals, not substituting the glyphs.

There is an Autocorrect option for fractions in OpenOffice too, but it doesn't work for all available fractions: 1/3 1/5 1/6 etc. At least it is doing a Glyph Substitution though.

If I figure out how to do it, one can also add numr and dnom tags so that other fractions like 11/64 will also work using super/subscripts.

Updated with version 1.1 to fix a few problems:
  1. Quotation marks were too big
  2. Letter spacing was too loose for lowercase
  3. Reduced default line spacing for 10 point text from 12 point to 11 point
  4. Improved design of % and per mille, per ten thousand symbols
  5. Added tty ligature to complete the set with tt and ty (this is not included in the MUFI ligature set).
  6. Improved design of fraction slash
  7. Enlarged Apple logo to match other symbols
  8. Improved design of stacking diacritics
Please let me know if you spot any errors or omissions.

FYI all fonts preinstalled with Microsoft Windows lack the Apple logo. I suspect it is due to the fact the Apple logo is trademarked.

Maybe its because they are just Windows “core” fonts? :D

A very nice font.

I notice that the font includes all of the accented characters needed for Esperanto and a full set of the accented characters needed for Welsh.

Updated to version 2.2 with more glyphs (now 2239) and more OpenType features: Alternate Annotation Forms, Alternative Fractions, Discretionary Ligatures, Standard Ligatures, Fractions, Historical Forms, Historical Ligatures, OldStyle Figures, Ordinals, Ornaments, Petite Caps, Petite Capitals From Capitals, Scientific Inferiors, Small Caps, Small Capitals From Capitals, Stylistic Alternates, Superscript, and Terminal Forms.

Note that none of my fonts have Small Caps glyphs, they all use Petite Caps (x-height small caps), but they include small caps features that also use the same Petite Caps glyphs. These features are included just in case some applications don't use the Petite Caps feature for Small Capitals. PagePlus X5 does, but I don't know about other applications.

If I figure out how to do it, one can also add numr and dnom tags so that other fractions like 11/64 will also work using super/subscripts.

With some help from a friend I figured out how to add this improved fractions feature, so typing 123/128, for example, will compose a fraction. To compose 1 23/128 insert a zero-width space after the first digit. The font now has 2,265 Glyphs, including baseline subscripts for fraction denominators.

As with my other most recent fonts, the Alternate Annotation Forms (nalt) and Stylistic Sets (salt) have been improved, and a few Currency Symbols were added including Turkish Lira, which is new to Unicode 6.2.

Cankama was updated to version 2.30 to replace Initial Forms with Stylistic Alternates, and to replace the existing Stylistic Alternates with Character Variants. This was necessary to avoid a problem caused by a significant change to the description of initial forms made by Microsoft. Initial forms are enabled by default and not meant to be exposed to the user, so they cannot be disabled in modern applications.

Version 2.31 added a few more kerning pairs.

The kerning classes are still being flattened using FontCreator build 2219. No errors were detected in the Code Editor.
