Re: Kelvinch - a font for body text.
Kelvinch is now finished (I think, I hope).
I have uploaded it to the Deviant Art website, I updated the version number to 3.1 because of the problems with the kern tables in 3.0 and the fact that I changed the positioning of most of the diacritic marks.
Kelvinch Download Page
I tried uploading Kelvinch to FontSpace but the website and then subsequently the guy who is on the end of the e-mail for the website claimed that the font files were corrupt and could not be installed on any Windows computer. I found this difficult to accept as I have installed these files on Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10 and Windows XP on both Laptops and Desktop machines without any trouble ... oh well.
Please feel free to download the files and if you have any trouble with them then let me know and I will do my best to fix things.

Excellent work. Even though I'm not that familiar with Deviant Art, I expect you'll get some nice feedback.PJMiller wrote:Kelvinch is now finished (I think, I hope).

Unless they provided details about what is wrong with the fonts, it must be lack of advanced font knowledge at FontSpace as your font is a sophisticated font and all validation tools I used confirm the font is fully valid.PJMiller wrote:I tried uploading Kelvinch to FontSpace but the website and then subsequently the guy who is on the end of the e-mail for the website claimed that the font files were corrupt and could not be installed on any Windows computer. Deviant Art is an art website for artworks of all kinds, only a small fraction of which are pornographic. Just click on the logo in the top left hand corner of the download page to get to the home page then click on the BROWSE tab. Check out the fractal art section.Erwin Denissen wrote:Excellent work. The guy at Fontspace didn't provide details and wasn't very helpful. I think the font is OK, you think the font is OK, everyone else who tried it thinks the font is OK, I think the problem is with Fontspace.

Re: Kelvinch - a font for body text.
Kelvinch has now been updated to version 3.2 which is now up on Deviant Art. I think I've fixed all the problems (but then I thought that on 3.1), I have altered several things and added open type features to handle Cyrillic italics for Macedonean and Serbian which are different from normal Cyrillic italics and for the correct handling of the IJ digraph in Dutch.
The crossbar of the capital A is no longer curved, this was unpopular so I removed it but I can't help feeling that Kelvinch has lost some of it's character, oh well ...
I hope this is the final version, only time will tell.

You can work around that dilemma by providing Stylistic Alternates. I downloaded Kelvinch from Font Squirrel, and that still has the curved crossbar.PJMiller wrote:The crossbar of the capital A is no longer curved, this was unpopular so I removed it but I can't help feeling that Kelvinch has lost some of it's character, oh well ...

On Font Squirrel the users don't upload their fonts, the people who run Font Squirrel select the fonts they want to have on their site. I sent them an e-mail to say that it had been updated but they haven't got the new version yet.
I didn't put it up there and I was surprised when I found it on Font Squirrel on a Google search. The version on Deviant Art is up to date.

I didn't think of that. Oh dear, does this mean I must produce a version 3.3 ?Bhikkhu Pesala wrote:You can work around that dilemma by providing Stylistic Alternates.

You can even provide a name for the Stylistic Set:
Although I'm not sure which applications already support that.

Font editing is never finished, but unless there's a serious bug any changes can wait until you feel the urge to make them. It's just a hobby — don't make it into a burden.PJMiller wrote:I didn't think of that. Oh dear, does this mean I must produce a version 3.3 ?

Don't worry, that post had it's tounge very firmly in it's cheek.Bhikkhu Pesala wrote:Font editing is never finished, but unless there's a serious bug any changes can wait until you feel the urge to make them. Anyway, thank you for your concern.

Re: Kelvinch - a font for body text.
I didn't want to produce a version 3.3 so I called it version 3.21 instead.
It now has the curved crossbar on the capital A as a stylistic alternative and I put in the historic ligatures which I had intended to add but had totally forgotten about until now.
I think it is complete now, until someone finds another problem.

Re: Kelvinch - a font for body text.
I have just updated Kelvinch on Deviant Art and on Font Space to version 3.3 , I changed the ligatures to make them work better with Microsoft Word by misusing contextual ligatures, I re-kerned the whole thing and optimised all the curves resulting in considerably smaller files. I didn't optimise them by hand I just pointed FC version 10 at them and said optimise that lot then just sat back and watched the blue bar creep slowly across the dialog box, much gain for little effort.
This will be the last update because a lot of people have downloaded it and it would be unfair to have more than one version out there, of course I will fix things if any errors are found but there will be no more development on Kelvinch.
However ...
I have started a new (as yet un-named) font using Kelvinch as a starting point. I have taken out the Georgian and Armenian because I was never happy that I got them entirely correct.
The new font will contain the remainder of the glyphs from Kelvinch plus Gothic, Runes, Old Italic and all the characters in the MUFI version 4.0 standard (if they aren't already there).
At the moment I'm still adjusting the style to give the font more contrast (the difference in thickness between the thick bits and the thin bits) and changing the serifs to improve the look of the font.
But don't hold your breath this may take a while.
