MainType and Windows XP x64

Post by carol_s »

Does anybody know if MainType is compatible with Windows XP x64. I need to be able to manage a large collection of Type 1, OpenType and TT fonts in this environment.

I don't see any reason why it shouldn't.
With its 64-bit processor, Windows XP Professional x64 Edition gives you access to greater amounts of memory while continuing to support 32-bit applications.
If you already have Windows XP Professional x64 installed then you can download and try MainType for the trial period. There is also a 30-day money back gaurantee, so that gives you a total of two months to see if it does want you want.

While it's true about the 30 day money back, I don't think there's a fool on this planet who'd want their money back for BEST font manager ever produced...!

I can't get it to manage my Multiple Master fonts - which cost me a not inconsiderable sum

I'm not sure, but you might need to install Adobe Type Manager Deluxe (no longer available) or Adobe Type Manager Light (ATM Light) to get support for MM fonts.

Whether you like it or not, Multiple Master fonts are abandoned by all major font vendors years ago. Adobe, the founder of this technology, released it's last MM fonts almost a decade ago.

PostScript Type 1 fonts are phasing out as well. This is mainly due to the lack of Unicode support and the fact that PostScript Type 1 font files are not cross-platform. OpenType fonts are the future.

Hi Erwin,

Unfortunately, ATM cannot be installed on a 64-bit OS - so I guess all those MM fonts will just have to be thrown away

I don't know if this is the correct sub-forum to ask, but does anybody know the Chronos MM front - and more importantly, if there is an equivalent Open Type font knocking around??

Going from MM to OTF.

Hi carol_s Welcome to the forum. (Itsa very good product!)

I am a collector who happens to have a set of Cronos Pro otf (32) and some Cronos MM ttf (9) so they do exist in the real world ... Their names are inconsistent, but what's new.

The MM are only ttf and the names are:

CronosMM SwBld.ttf
CronosMM Sw.ttf
CronosMM It.ttf
CronosMM BoldItalic.ttf
CronosMM Bold.ttf
CronosMM.ttf
Cronos MM Small Caps & OldStyle Figures.ttf
Cronos MM Ornaments.ttf
Cronos MM Italic Small Caps & Old Style Figures.ttf

The Adobe web site referenced above (http://store.adobe.com/type/browser/mmoffer.html) showed the translation from MM to OTF, unfortunately it's down right now or I would have bought you some as a welcoming gift...
