Suggestion: Add some columns to the [view] window

Post by zjy »

I suggest adding the following column names to the [View] window: [Face Name], [Font File Name], [Postscript Name], [Unique Font Identifier].
[Font File Name] and [Unique Font Identifier] help to quickly distinguish between fonts with the same or similar names. This is mainly used when sorting fonts in batches, such as cleaning up redundant (duplicate or almost identical) fonts. [Font File Name] can see the location of the Font File without opening the folder in which it is located -- because when you open it, you can only see the location of one Font File, making it difficult to compare the location of other files.

Have you tried the Select Duplicates feature?

We could add more columns, but they must be stored in the database, so that will increase in size. The software will also become slower when you request a new list of fonts, so that would be the downside. Also most regular users will never have any need for most of that data and it will cost time to implement it.

Filename is a little complicated as a font can be stored in many locations with different file names. Right now you can inspect the file names through the Information panel.

For example, imagine that you have a font that has many versions (files) that may have been developed by different people or by the same person, but none of them have been installed.There are two scenarios:
1. They have the same name (including the Font Family name and full name), but their file names is different, which may be changed by different people;
2. But they have the same name and are in different subfolders of the same folder.
You may need to compare some information about these versions (such as name, version, modification date, location and size of file, etc.) and then decide to delete multiple versions of them that are no longer needed.
For the first case, we need to compare the file name, version and modification date, but before deleting, you need to know which location of the file is retained. If you go to view the location information of the file one by one, it will be very troublesome.
In the second case, before deleting, you need to pay attention to some key location information, because a version may be necessary for some known important file in the same folder.In this case, it is still important to display the location of the font file.
