Section symbol being replaced

Post by justin10 »

Hello,

I have a user that has created a Word doc. and converted it in a pdf. She puts both files on the server and another user opens the files. The section symbols that "were in" the document are replaced by quotation marks and in some places where there should be qoutation marks there are none. The font that was used to create both the word doc and the pdf was Times New Roman and sometimes Arial is used. This issue only happens on that one PC (the PC that is most needed to view the documents correctly). Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening and any possible solutions?

Hey Justin,

It's probably a mismatch in the character repertoire in the different versions of the fonts on the two computers, namely a missing section sign (kind of weird, it should be there), and probably smart quotes. There is a distinct possibility that the end computer does not recognize the font the PDF was created with, and is substituting another similar one that has a seriously restricted repertoire.

There are a couple ways of getting around either problem: first, you can embed the fonts in the PDF, but the ability to do this is dependent on font permissions. The foolproof workaround is to generate the PDF as an image. This should be an option when you save your file.

Any other ideas?
