Font Characters and Equations in MS Word

Hi all,
I've created my very first TTF of Greek mathematical symbols, created from hand-drawn scanned images. All went well.
In MS Word, the Insert/Symbols works perfectly in free text (ie sentences). All as intended.
However, if I Insert/Equation (from the list) and then attempt to Insert/Symbols into it, the characters show up as +. %, #, !, etc instead of the intended Greek characters. If I then insert back into the free text, all is good again. Something must be preventing the characters from being used in equations. Perhaps it's a setting of FontCreator? I'm using v10.1 Pro.
