When you open or double-click a file within Windows file explorer, it runs it if it is an executable, otherwise it will open the file in the default program.
On a fresh Windows installation, font files will be opened in Windows default font viewer program.
But over time other software might become the default program associated with the specific file type or file extension. Our software does not automatically change this behavior, but you can easily make the change.
So if you like to work with your font files in FontCreator then you might want to change the default file association for .ttf .otf .ttc and .fcp files.
Within Windows file explorer, go to a folder which contains font files. Right-click a font file and select “Open With -> Choose Default Program” from the context menu. Now select FontCreator in the newly opened dialog, and also check the option "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file".
Windows will automatically show the newly associated file type icon in File Explorer, so you can easily see which program is set as the default program assigned to the font file type.
If this doesn't work, don't worry as the is another way to achieve the same goal. Open Control Panel and select Programs. Now you can click "Associate a file type or protocol with a program" or "Make a file type always open in a specific program". Now scroll down the list until you see the specific font file extension. Select the file extension, and then click "Change program...", located just above the scroll bar. Now select FontCreator in the newly opened dialog.
If you later wish to revert back to Windows Font Viewer, just right-click a font file and select “Open With -> Windows Font Viewer”.
