Calculating Super/Subscript Metrics

Post by Bhikkhu Pesala »

Its quite complicated to calculate the metrics for superscripts and subscripts, which can be used to calculate the size and/or position of superscripts for fonts that don't have superscript and subscript glyphs. That is why I went to some trouble to write a tutorial on General Font Metrics.

A calculate button to do this task would be great, but even better would be a preview very much like the manual kerning dialogue, where the user can just drag the superscript or subscript to the desired position, and have FontCreator calculate the metrics from that dialogue, as it currently does for kerning values.

This was implemented some time ago — first in FontCreator 7, I believe.

From the Font Properties, select the General Tab, and click on the Calculate Button.
