OpenType Font Variations

OpenType specification version 1.8 has just been released, and comes with
OpenType Font Variations.
It looks promising, but don't expect support for it in FontCreator soon.

There is no official mention of this, but it seems the color font technology (COLR, Color table and CPAL, Color palette table) from Microsoft is the only one that will work within OpenType Font Variations. Maybe Microsoft is silently winning the
font color battle.
It is too soon to tell if this has additional benefits for people who are interested in color fonts, especially since it will take some time before people really start making such fonts on a broader scale.
