MyFonts rejects fonts created from FontCreator?

Post by jch02140 »

Sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum but I just noticed that MyFonts seems to reject fonts made with FontCreator...
Does anyone have fonts made with FontCreator are accepted by MyFonts?...

We know several font designers who make their fonts with FontCreator and sell them at myfonts.

I'll contact them to find out the reason for this.

I've send them an email and asked why fonts made with FontCreator are not accepted, but so far I haven't received a response.

I'll wait till Monday before I contact another person.

Monotype's phone number for MyFonts is:

1-781-970-6000

Sometimes a phone call works better than email.

I've called that number and was told to contact another person. So I send him an email earlier today. I hope that helps.

I received a reply yesterday afternoon. Good news and most likely more good news:

They will remove FontCreator from the "non-accepted" list. I will let you know when this is done.

The next couple of weeks they are going to test our software to see if it can be put on the "good list".

Hello Erwin,

I have only used the Professional version. Of the three versions, the Home version does not allow for commercial use.

This is different from other font creator applications I think. There are other limitations say between FontLab's main product and TypeTool products. There is no commercial/non-commercial difference.

So a question would be if MyFonts desired to honor HL's distinction, is there a means for them to differentiate between the fonts that the Home, Standard and Professional versions can generate?

Oh, interesting. So then there are two questions: 1) Is there any difference in the font file created between any of the Font Creator software versions, in that, do the non-professional versions create a file that is limited in some way? And, 2) Is there any difference in the font file created by the Professional Font Creator and the other font software programs that are listed as acceptable my My Fonts? I use a several thousand dollar software package to create .dwg files. But there are other, even free, programs that can also create .dwg files. The creation of the file, and the definition of the file is different than how "powerful" or "complete" or "professional" or "comprehensive" the program is, or IS SEEN BY SOME TO BE.

Looks like they have removed FontCreator from the rejected list. :)

However, they did not add it to the recommended list either...
 Oh well...

The only difference is the fact you are not allowed to use the home edition for commercial purposes. On export we set the license agreement field to:
"This font is made with the home edition of FontCreator. You may not use this font for commercial purposes."
And the License URL to:
http://www.high-logic.com/fontcreator/fontlicense.html

Sure they are differences, but I think FontCreator is currently one of the most advanced font editors.

Perfect!

The next couple of weeks they will test our software, so then we'll know more.

I expect they will add both:
FontCreator Standard
FontCreator Professional

At least that is how they did it with Glyphs and Glyph Mini.

People from MyFonts are still testing FontCreator, but I've just received an update.

They haven't completed their audit yet, but so far they seem to like our font editor. Currently their main concern is the fact FontCreator has no way of editing CFF based outlines. The lack of more advanced Metric and Kerning windows have also been mentioned. Fortunately they haven't found any reasons to not accept foundries onto MyFonts who made their fonts with FontCreator.

That isn't a big surprise, as I know several customers/foundries already sell their fonts at MyFonts

I'll keep you posted when more news comes.

Thanks for the update, Erwin.

Heck, they seem to move as fast as the US Government! Glacial comes to mind.
