Mac Font Suitcase (T1) to FontCreator

Postby elipsett » Wed Aug 26, 2015 1:56 am

I have some old fonts used in old layouts, and really need to get them from the old Mac font suitcases (Adobe Type 1) into a different font format.
I have both Mac and WIndows machines.

I know the font information is stored in the resource fork (hidden files starting with a .), and can move the suitcase and hidden files to the Windows machine easily enough, but is there any way to get the actual font data into FontCreator?

FontCreator doesn't support that ancient format, but I think CrossFont can do the font format conversion.

Hi, Erwin,

Good to see you're still alive and kicking... it's been a couple years now.

I'll have a look at CrossFont, thanks.
Transtype is another option, but I thought it'd be good to ask here before forking out a hundred bucks.

Hmm... I see CrossFont is $70.

Have you (or anyone else that might be watching this thread) used either, and have any comments about which might be better?

I've never used them, but I know several customers have used these utilities in the past.

TransType is made by one of the main stream font software companies, and is available for both Windows and Mac OS X, so no doubt it works like a charm.

Why not give both a try and let us know your results?

Yes, I've used FontLab products.
Very nice, very expensive.

If I had a lot more time and interest in beating my head into walls I'd try them both, but these days I'm more interested in just getting something that does what it's supposed to do, and lets me get on with what I'm supposed to do.
One of my clients should have TransType; I'll see if they have any comments on usability.

Thanks!

Actually, I still have Fontographer around somewhere, but I no longer have a machine with the OS it needs... <sigh>
