Tested Font Way Too Small

Post by mdmjm »

Hello,
I'm a total newbie here.
I've created my very first font resembling a handwriting.
Everything looked pretty good until I've installed and tested it in Word and is way too small.
At normal 100% view at size 11-12, it looks very small - Screenshot1.
The second screenshot shows it zoomed to about 200% at size 30.
I've included a third screenshot of how my letters look in FontCreator.

Is there a way I can quickly adjust all these characters to be at a readable size at size 11 atleast at a normal 100% view?
Or do I have to manually adjust each setting in Font Properties?
Thanks so much in advance!

Your glyphs are way below the baseline. I would fix that first.

Then, Font Properties, Metrics, Calculate will maximise the size of the text for any given point size, but the design of the font with a small x-height compared to the Ascenders and Descenders will always result in text that is smaller at 12 point than standard fonts like Times or Arial.

Script faces like my Mahakampa also look small at standard point sizes. A lot of space is required to prevent ugly clashes between the tops of ascenders in letters like h or M, and the bottom of descenders in letters like j or y.

Also be sure your upem value is close to your WinAscent value. If those are too far apart, you might want to use a transform feature to scale your glyphs and then recalculate font metrics.

Thank you @Erwin and @Bhikkhu for responding quickly!
I hope you'll bear with me a bit more as I try to learn this for the first time.
I attached another screenshot of my current Font Metrics; My UPEM is set to 1000.

Question1- So I need to manually move each glyph to change the baseline, right?
(I originally aligned all characters in Adobe Illustrator in a box before copy-pasting them in FontCreator for further edits.)
Will my glyphs still be in a straight line if I transform them to the baseline one by one? Why does it seem like my font were okay on the baseline even if they were below it?
Question 2 - Can you please direct me where or how to scale the glyphs?
I found this link: <https://www.high-logic.com/fontcreator/ ... ations.pdf> but I am more confused where to go from here.
Or do I just manually/visually scale them up on that same Glyph edit cell?
Question 3 - Do I just click on the Calculate button for maximum font properties and accept the changes from my current metrics settings?

If all of your glyphs are below the baseline they may align with each other just fine, but if you use another font in the same line of text they will be out of position. Some glyphs may need to overshoot the baseline, while others with flat bases may sit right on it. Move all of your glyphs up by the same amount. If you have the Home Edition you will have to do this manually, but the Glyph Transformer can move all selected glyphs vertically by the same amount.

Oh good to know! Thanks for educating me!
Sorry, I forgot to mention that I have the professional edition.
How do I manipulate the Glyph Transformer?

The Glyph Transform can be used to batch process all selected glyphs. For your case, say you want to move the glyphs up by 200 units and scale them up by 120% you would use these settings.
