Have you tried the Alphabet Synthesis Machine at the http://alphabet.tmema.org webspace?
A Java applet lets you produce, within the limits of the program, a font of your own.
The Alphabet Synthesis Machine was an important step on my journey to becoming a font designer. I produced some fonts using it and became interested in how to produce fonts of my own design.
Some of the fonts which I produced using the Alphabet Synthesis Machine are available in our family webspace.
Also, the links from the web page are interesting, though they are not about fonts.

I have just noticed that the Alphabet Synthesis Machine is now available for use again.
The old link of http://alphabet.tmema.org takes one through to the new location.
