Issues with kerning (fi)
I recently put together a font and upon using the font in creative programs such as Adobe InDesign, I noticed that when you type a word that has the letters "f" and "i" next to each other such as the word "profitable," the "f" and "i" disappear until you manually adjust the kerning. What is the cause of this and is there a solution?

There is an f+i ligature (single character for more than one letter) that the program is trying to insert, but your font does not have it. There should be an option somewhere in the InDesign options that disables standard ligatures. If you can't find that term in the help, try searching for "smart quotes" - the ligature control is usually at the same place.
