Hey Erwin,
I recorded a 3-part video (about 8 minutes total to watch them all):
https://www.loom.com/share/4a8ce5b31585 ... 9d79439be0
https://www.loom.com/share/5589d3533d45 ... a737caab48
https://www.loom.com/share/97e81cd29437 ... cc5d7e904c

TL;DR

I demonstrate the simplify tool in Adobe Illustrator
I demonstrate teh simplify tool in FontLab7 (and also another cool tool to get rid of points)
I demonstrate how I simplify my contours as to right now in FontCreator

It would be great to see a simplify tool FontCreator.

I have watched the videos. I clearly see FontCreator needs some improvements here.

Fortunately FontCreator 14 will come with mask support, so you can put the original outline in the background, so you can trace that. We also have the raster based background, as you actually used in the second video, but I hope people will get used to using the mask.

What do you mean by "mask"?
I know what mask is in photoshop and illustrator, but I think you mean something else.

In FC14 when you are editing a glyph outline, select Tools -> Set as Mask from the main menu. It is like a copy of your outline, but then placed in the background. You can not edit it, but you can swap between actual outline and the mask. It only supports simple outlines, so no composites.

I wasn't aware of that feature! Very useful. I'll start to use it...
