display font naming convention rules / guidelines?

First: are there such things for naming display fonts? Most that I've seen assign some unique name to the font, with a descriptive word thereafter if appropriate (e.g., bold, italic, ultra, condensed). I'm not sure what to do if I've settled on a name for a display font, and want to amplify it to re...

Re: From Vector (e.g. an Adobe Illustrator image) to Font

I'm a retired engineer, so naturally I tend to use AutoCAD instead of, say, Adobe Illustrator to create glyphs and subsequently convert them to SVG files with another application. I noted that SVG files thus created need to have the glyph enlarged by dragging one of the corners of the imported image...

Need help restoring the glyph previews in the overall view

I did something--no idea what!--that caused the glyph previews to disappear in the overall view, so what I have is shown in the attachment. blank overview.jpg Yet when I go into the individual glyphs, I see anything I've entered, but for glyphs where I haven't put in any new contours or anything of ...

Re: recommendations for textbooks on font design

Thanks very much: I ordered two of those mentioned. No worries about dry textbooks: I'm intimately familiar with engineering texts, which pretty much set the bar on dry reading.

recommendations for textbooks on font design

Just what the subject says: I'm looking for recommendations on font design textbooks. Ideally such a textbook would define terms with plenty of illustrations, give general guidelines on proportions (what in engineering might be called recognized as generally accepted good practice), etc. Then again,...

Re: Suggestion for Metrics

And what tool is that, please? I realize that there's a decided aesthetic element to font design that makes what I'll call good practice more nebulous than it is in engineering; however, reason suggests to me that there have to be some guidelines that could be derived from the most successful / clas...

Re: Suggestion for Metrics

Like I said above: it's to get a handle on what might be called generally accepted good practices. I'm an engineer, and a lot of sizing of equipment is based on good practices for proportions. Thus, I approach font design from an engineer's viewpoint, and would like to see such practices documented....

Re: Suggestion for Metrics

Thanks for that link to the discussion. What I'm after would be metrics that a more-or-less-related selection of fonts (say, serif fonts very roughly along the lines of Garamond or Georgia) use, so I could find average / typical values as starting points to adjust to suit my tastes. Definitely not t...

Suggestion for Metrics

This may already be there and I don't know how to find it, but how about a table summarizing the metrics for each glyph? That way, at a glance, you can see whether the height, bearings, you name it, are reasonable or need some adjustment. It would also be very handy for novices like me to compare on...

The latter looks like a live one since I'm not exactly an artist. Thanks.

Once edited (bearing the above in mind), any suggestions where (what I think is) the finished product ought to be posted?

Two to try

OK, I'm new at the font creation business, so bear that in mind--but offer whatever feedback you will. One of these I call "Engraved Nameplate" since it reminds me of white-on-black nameplates one found on machines, machine tools, control panels, etc. fifty or more years ago. The other is ...

Re: How do I make a glyph usable?

Thanks all around.

Now, a follow-up question: suppose for some obscure reason I wanted to create (say) a vulgar fraction 3/17? I rather doubt that exists anywhere, so how would one go about mapping something brand-new?

How do I make a glyph usable?

As noted I'm a beginner, interested in font design as a hobby. That said, here's what's probably an easy question. Suppose I want to add a new glyph (for grins, let's say I want to add the so-called vulgar fraction ⅛). The operation clearly starts with the "Insert Glyph" command, which all...
