Re: Context Chain Substitution

Thank you, Erwin
That is very helpful. I will try it out when I get back to 'The Beast' upstairs.
Best wishes

Context Chain Substitution

Hello I am having trouble with Chained Context Substitution. What I want to achieve is to substitute a normal 's' for the 'long s' as used in C17 and C18 writing. So far I have managed to use ligature substitution, but the long s requires some sensitivity to context. I have set up a substitution tab...

Re: initial, medial and terminal forms

Hello again Erwin
I've just had a look at the link you supplied - it's head buzzy time. I'll have to print it out and read slowly before trying it out.
Thank you again

Re: initial, medial and terminal forms

Thank you Erwin
I am slowly getting to grips with the Open Type features. I think I have cracked the ligature problem (with your help and that of Bhikku Pasala) and now getting into more obscure (for me) territory.

Re: Ligatures, substitutions and scripts

Hello again Bhikkhu I have tried and my frustration is considerable, so I shall have a cup of tea after I have posted this. I am attaching two screen shots, which are the latest attempts to get the script to work. Before attempting this, I deleted all scripts and other stuff so as to get a clean go ...

Re: Ligatures, substitutions and scripts

Hi Bhikkhu Thank you. Yes, I have looked at them. I have got as far as setting up a lookup for the ligatures, but when I test the code syntax I'm told it's not used. Looking at the results, I seem to have a proliferation of Ligature1, Ligature2, and so on, and I just can't get the thing to work. I a...

Ligatures, substitutions and scripts

Hello I apologise in advance for my obtuse stupidity, but I can't make head nor tail of the substitution and ligature elements of FontCreator. Scripts, for example; where are they in Open Type designer? Or do we have to write our own? The thing is, I am working on a number of 'historical' fonts for ...

This is a runic font (first pass). It is based on (one of the versions of) the Anglo-Saxon futhorc, but it also contains a complete Unicode runic block plus some versions that Unicode have missed. As a bonus it also contains some Viking symbols.

Runic unicode block and bearings

I am working on a runic font (just because I can). Accordingly I have been working on the Unicode Runic block, filling it with the requisite images. So far so good. Some of these I have copied into the Latin mappings so that the font may be used as a normal font. Again, so far so good. The problem I...

Re: Ancient Gothic

'Ancient Gothic'? Are you talking about runes? If so, the major problem is that there are several runic 'alphabets' developed throughout the Scandinavian world at different times and places. Also, even if someone was working to, say, the Anglo-Saxon futhorc, they may well use idiosyncratic forms of ...

Just a thought on guidelines

Sometimes I get very confused with all the guidelines that I occassionally need when setting up a font. I have not yet found a way of resetting the red guides that appear in the glyph editing window, so set up my own in preference. In some of my fonts the x-height is very different to the red guide,...

Re: Cheriton Hand and Martha

I have just spent some (happy?) hours checking spacing and kerning on Martha. I think (hope more like) that the font is now usable in its present form. I still have to work on the swash letters, finials and decorations, but I want to understand how the Open Type modifications work first. As it is I ...

Re: Kerning Pairs

Hello again Bikkhu. I also seem to get the spacing too tight, but occasionally come across a pair that seem miles away from each other. Thank you for your advice. I have produced a version of the test document in RTF and also taken the opportunity to edit it slightly as well so that it occupies only...
