Re: Symbol Fonts

I think in general the original term was "pi fonts" and referred to any assortment of random typographical symbols. Pictorial or symbol both work as descriptors for such fonts.

And it works very well the other way; use FontStruct to create your basic font design then bring the TTF file over to FCP to do tweaking and kerning and such.

FontStruct

Has anyone here played with the new FontStruct tool? It's not going to replace FCP or any of the other packages, but for a fun way to play with building blocks to make basic fonts, it's a hoot. Check it out at Fontstruct!

I would say to leave the whole bold/italic thing out, IMO, and use that as a selling feature for users to add the FCP to their stable of programs. TO me, this program is, at this point, a simple way to make personalized handwriting/ personal fonts. I think the analogy would be ScanFont by FontLab, w...

I knew that, but there's nothing in the docs saying that. As I said, I'm being Mr. Noobie Betatester here and I tried a sample font "not knowing" that to see how the program handled it. It was an interesting experiment.

I'm going to play the part of Mr. Noobie Betatester here. Do I have to draw 5 -?- symbols for my font to work well? What am I supposed to do with those slots? And does my whole character have to fit within the guideline hash marks, or can the lower parts of descending letters drop below the 4th mark...

For what it's worth, William, this font has a lot of promise. It reminds me vaguely of the old serif font included with Borland Turbo Pascal, but has a unique flavour. Keep working at it and be sure to extend the character set!

I don't think there is really enough font designers to warrant such a competition; and, on the other hand, the arts society in question may be afraid of having to process the responses. Not all would-be designers are equally gifted!

Excited new user...

This is great! No sooner do I register my software than there's a new version out... this is wonderful!

Now, the only question is: To wait until I've gotten the new Harry Potter book and read it or start playing with the new version of FCP immediately...

Which version of FCP should I register?

So my wife and I have been playing around with the features and functions of FCP, and it's pretty much a given that we will get it now. TypeTool has some nicer features, but the auto-trace feature of FCP is a great feature for our purposes. If we only intend to make and distribute free fonts, do we ...
