Maybe you accidentally changed glyph display mode to color?
To fix that, select View from the main menu and then set Glyph Display Mode to Auto.
What also might help is to reset zoom. Also from the View menu, but now select Zoom Reset.

Spcae should not be used to display outlines.

I think there are 3 shaping engines that are used in the last years, a default one, a composer, and Harfbuzz. Not sure if all use the same metrics.

I am afraid it will only work if you use the calculate button, but then most likely all values are updated. FontCreator 15 has a button that calculates the values. It is mostly based on the suggestions from the tutorial.
