Re: OpenType and TrueType
The extension makes no difference — but it's a convenient way to distinguish the font types in Windows Explorer, so I name fonts with an *.otf extension if they contain OpenType features. A *.ttf extension will work just the same. FontCreator always converts Postscript outlines to Truetype outlines...

OpenType and TrueType
[First thanks to Erwin for the recent info on my 'Experiments with Kerning' thread - I'm working on it, and will respond in due course.] But now another two questions: I can export a font with open type features or without. I'm starting to do it with as I come to terms with ligatures etc. And as I'm...

Re: Experiments with Kerning Pairs
With my font, loaded (for the screen) at a size where capitals are 24 pixels high, there aren't any. But loaded (for printing) such that capitals are 296 pixels high, it reports 909 kerning pairs! Many of them, it appears, involve symbols which are not even in the font! However, they do include AV,...

Experiments with Kerning Pairs
This is a follow up to the recent kerning pairs thread, but I have some new evidence, and new bafflement. I have developed a font over quite a long period. It has 100 kerning pairs as reported in the caption of Font Creator's kerning pairs window, and the list looks about that long. [I've experiment...

Re: Kerning pairs not exporting?
I'd really like to get to the bottom of this one too. Here are three pairs defined with kerning in the preview window: preview-toolbar.png and in the test window: testwindow.png The kerning shows on all three in the preview toolbar but only on the AV in the test window! The delta is the Greek Capita...

Re: How to use Ligatures and Glyph Substitutions
So why not use a menu to select from two or more Stylistic sets. Only one glyph needs to mapped, the others can use glyph substitutions... It's the mechanism for drawing the substituted glyph I'm not sure of. You indicated that you replace strings something like uu with a substitute u-like glyph: i...

Re: How to use Ligatures and Glyph Substitutions
I am aware that this thread has evolved from support on compound glyphs (as it turned out) to support on other complex OTF features. I hope that this is OK as I am learning a lot from it, and appreciate it greatly. Will your font allow users to type the Bass Clef, or will they have to select it from...

Re: How to use Ligatures and Glyph Substitutions
What you want is Contextual Ligatures , which only makes a glyph substitution in a particular context. The user doesn't have to make a conscious choice which variant to type, they just enable the Contextual ligature feature, and the substitution is made according to context, “e.g. in Caflisch Scrip...

Re: How to use Ligatures and Glyph Substitutions
I would be surprised if any applications do not support composites. There are many that do not support ligatures. Typing f then f then i, for example, ... Thanks! I was vaguely aware of the way ligatures worked, but vaguer on the syntax for introducing them. Your reply has tempted me to do a bit of...

Re: Music Enhanced Text Fonts
I notice that you are based in the United Kingdom. Could you please consider the possibility of producing a pdf (Portable Document Format) document detailing the 'Level 1 Music Enhanced Text Font' format and 'Level 2 Music Enhanced Text Font' format and publishing it, specifically sending a copy to...

How to use Ligatures and Glyph Substitutions
[letters with circumflex] Why make it simple at all? .... Probably three reasons: 1. In the fonts I'm 'enhancing' the circumflex vowels tend, as far as I can see, to be simple glyphs. 2. My ignorance about the uses of composite glyphs. 3. My suspicions about which applications can actually handle c...

Re: Music Enhanced Text Fonts
There are more musical symbols in the range 1D100 - 1D1FF. Yes I know about those. Unfortunately they're not a lot of use. They're designed for use by notation software, rather than in text, and even there, they lack some common symbols, and include a host of symbols which I can confidently say (wi...

Re: Glyphs apprently 'locked' not editable?
Click "Make Simple" on the Glyph toolbar, or from the Edit menu. Thanks - that worked a treat. When copying glyphs from the glyph overview, don't open the Glyph Edit Window before pasting them. That creates a composite glyph. I hadn't realised that. Try it — select two glyphs, e.g. comma ...

Re: Glyphs apprently 'locked' not editable?
You're probably viewing a composite glyph like À Not as far as I know: the last one was the currency symbol.... I may be mistaken. If I right click on the glyph window, and choose 'Glyph member properties' it does seem to indicate that this is a composite glyph. Surely it shouldn't be? I'm going to...

Re: Glyphs apprently 'locked' not editable?
Not as far as I know: the last one was the currency symbol. I copied it and pasted it into a new glyph, and couldn't select anything on the copy. (I want to remove the top left and bottom right 'ears', leaving bottom left and top right.)Bhikkhu Pesala wrote:You're probably viewing a composite glyph like À
