Re: Is .notdef required or not?

If, say, the advance width of the space character were zero then there would be no observable space between words in the display, which is not what is wanted. Then it wouldn't be a space character, it would be a no-space character. ;) Microsoft has a good page on how big (or small) to make one's sp...

Re: Is .notdef required or not?

Both .null and nonmarkingreturn used to be required, but they are now obsolete. https://www.high-logic.com/fontcreator/manual11/recommendedglyphs.html Oh, thanks for that link! I guess I could delete the .null and nonmarkingreturn, but figuring I'll keep them, at least I have the advance width now ...

Re: Question re working with color

Oh, I think I may have figured out my problem. There was a thing in there when you change your color mode ("C") and you get a little pop-up window to add members -- I didn't notice that before.

Just did that, and I think everything will work out now -- I'll be back, no doubt, if it doesn't. ;)

Re: Question re working with color

See the tutorial thread on Creating Multicoloured Glyphs In your tutorial, Bhikkhu, you have this bit... Stage 4: In the Original glyph, show the Members toolbar, and insert the other three coloured members. This was the problem I had with Bern's first instructions, too (haven't tried out the updat...

Re: Question re working with color

Oh, wow, thank you, Bern, for those detailed instructions! I tried them out last night, but got stuck about half-way because there must be something different between version 9 and v. 11. Thank you so much, though, for taking that time and trouble to write that all out! And thanks to Bhikkhu, too, f...

Question re working with color

I created a set of decorative initials, the A for which looks like this... Alde Decorative A - BW.jpg One of the big uses I'll have for my fonts is in ebooks, and it would be totally cool if I could do up a color version of my font, too, using the same off-reddish color (#c32f0a) that I use for my h...

Re: Cyrillic Blackletter font

Hey, MikeW, I told you I remembered you from here before! ;) I was just recalling the earlier discussion we'd had here about the font you'd made where you automatically swap out the longs in place of the "s" -- and not everywhere, of course, but just where it should be used. I was just re-reading th...

Re: License suggestions?

I'm still somewhat undecided about what to do for the license for my fonts, or even whether to just give them away for free even for commercial use, but I've been googling about it and found some resources that might be helpful for others out there. A Breakdown of Font Licensing for Bloggers https:/...

Re: License suggestions?

I think I'm now leaning to perhaps just giving my fonts away for free to anyone, even for commercial use -- just free to do whatever you want with them. However, looking at the SIL Open Font License info again here... https://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?site_id=nrsi&id=OFL ...one aspect of ...

Re: License suggestions?

That's an idea, too, to ask for donations -- but then, technically that has to be reported as a "business income," too, and then you have to go through the whole palava of filing quarterly reports and tax returns on that as well.

Just for maybe $5! ;)

Re: "Add new item" request

Reflecting on this a bit more, I'm thinking that I can see that perhaps it might be problematic to have "so much stuff" in the OpenType Designer if one's monitor resolution was low, so maybe that little window could not be permanently attached to the other main OpenType Designer window, but you coul...

Re: License suggestions?

Unless you have the fund to pursue copyright infringement, it makes no sense to charge the same as the big foundries do. If you only ask for $5 some users might be happy to pay, but of course you will need a PayPal account or some other easy way for people to pay. Um, why would I be asking anyone t...

License suggestions?

I haven't got a clue what to put for my font license. I've thought long and hard about whether to try to sell my fonts, but speaking with other type designers I know (including some "world class" ones), it just doesn't seem all that lucrative, and with my set of historical fonts, I'm not sure how bi...

"Add new item" request

Having just added in all the substitutions for all my smallcaps (including those for piles of ligs) -- and then screwing it up and having to start all over from scratch, only to screw it up again and having to start all over once more (finally got it right!) -- it occurred to me that there surely ha...

Re: Smallcaps suggestions?

Yes, it is possible to change a substitution lookup type. Within the OpenType Designer dialog select the lookup and click the "Code editor" button in the upper right toolbar. To change a ligature into a multiple substitution just change the code. Interesting, but where/how does it specify that it's...
