Right click on the character right before where you want a new character (like after I, i, s, S, g, and G) and click "Add". Make the character like you would any other. Then, you need to map those guys, so you can access the glyph in a program. You can do this at right click:Properties:map...

The space character, like any other, has a width to it. It should be glyph 4 on your font. Right click on it and select properties. Then adjust the Advance Width under glyph metrics to a smaller number, and the width of your word space will change. That should solve your first problem. You should al...

Yeah, when you have "reduntant" points along an angled line, they may or may not actually be redundant. If the redundant point is not exactly along the line between the two outlying points, it is not mathematically redundant. If you zoom down and create a diagonal line that's only a dozen ...

I would just delete one of the cases and simply map both cases to the first, so each glyph has two mappings. That way, you don't need all the extra kerning, and you have no overhead for composites or even the extra glyph spaces. That would be my down and dirty solution. It takes some time, but I hav...

The Unicode system actually has over a million codepoints. 2048 codepoints are reserved for combined mappings. The first 1024 combine with the second 1024 to create over a million extra mappings for glyphs. Add that to the 63,000+ normal codepoints, and you have quite a lot of room to put glyphs. As...

I've just been checking fonts out here, and these dashes are all over the place! The more homogenized, Microsoft dominated a typeface is (at least in my opinion) the more likely it is to have the 2048 and 1024 funit em and en dashes. So looks like this is a pretty complex question. Franklin Gothic B...

Hmmmm. My definition for the width of the en and em dashes may be off. I'd seen a previous definition which based the dashes and spaces on the width of the characters 'n' and 'm'. Bikkhu's document seems to contradict this. This might be a matter of style and design, but it might be more technical t...

The em dash and en dash are very important. This is an excerpt from Robert Bringhurst's The Elemnts of Typographic Style, second edition: 5.2.1 Use spaced en dashes rather than em dashees or hyphens to set off phrases. Stanard computer keyboards and typwriters include only one dash, but a normal fon...

Make sure you change both the Macintosh and Microsoft Naming attributes. I only changed the Macintosh names when I first started, and it took me quite a while to realize that the two formats are independent.

I have one of the slowest connections around (a 56k modem over bad phone lines) and have no problem with most of the smaller images. The linking to an image is a good idea, and I will use that in the future. I don't think we will run into the technical problems I had posting the image if I post a li...

If you right click on your combining character and change the left side bearing to a negative number, it will combine. You can also modify the side-bearing in the glyph edit window. I have modified an 'a' to be combining with a previous character so you can see what it should look like. http://forum...

Don't knock creating the glyphs entirely within the program: The structure and mathematical precision of bezier curves allows some of us (and by "some of us" I mean "me") to actually be artistic. I have always seriously lacked in artistic ability, but I have a highly refined aest...

Nope. What you need to do is click the menu item file:new and choose the format you want (probably wgl4.ttf). Once you have a new font, double click on the character you want to create. (I think you've already got this far from your description) From there, you have two options: 1. Right click and s...

I just joined VOLT, and my impression, from playing with the software, is that open type is an extension of true type. I've put open type features in my Greek font, and edited the font in fcp, all with no problem other than VOLT saying I have a bad cmap table every time I try to save. Doesn't matter...
