Re: FontCreator support for Serbian Cyrillic

You can add any characters you like to your font but as Bhikkhu Pesala said it is probably better to stick to the codepoints recommended in Unicode. Unicode already has a several blocks dedicated to Cyrillic the main one being $400 to $4FF, of course this is for Russian Cyrillic plus a few archaic c...

Re: Help with ligatures, etc.

There are a great many applications out there that do not kern or do not support any of the open type features. Some do nothing more than a very basic rendering of the text. I thought about adding ligatures to substitute for proper kerning but the problem is that the applications which don't kern ar...

Turkish ligatures and feedback on Kelvinch

I have had some feedback from someone using Kelvinch which I thought might be useful for people. He said that the fi ligature should not be used for Turkish because Turkish has both the dotted i and the dotless i, they are two different letters with different sounds and different meanings, if you ha...

Re: Adding Ligatures in place of Kerning.

But this problem should not exist. I am not a programmer but I sometimes wonder why some applications support Open Type features whilst others do not. Are Open Type features implemented in the application or in the operating system ? I thought they were implemented in the operating system, in which ...

Re: Adding Ligatures in place of Kerning.

Actually I just wanted to type the text and have it displayed well. Putting in all the ligatures by hand would be a real pain. The problem is the difference between applications which handle information well but don't support open type features and those that display text well with all the bells and...

XUID field.

I have been told that Adobe products require a font to have an 'XUID' whatever that is. I have looked through the font properties and have not spotted this field. What is an XUID field and what is it's significance ? How is it used by programs? Does a font generated by Font Creator have an XUID fiel...

Re: Adding Ligatures in place of Kerning.

I'm sorry, my comments were not meant as a criticism.

Yes I experimented with these ligatures and the applications I mentioned above didn't do ligatures either. They didn't even kern with a legacy kern table.

Oh well ...

It was worth a try.

Re: Adding Ligatures in place of Kerning.

I like thought. I express it all the time ;-) I do not believe it is our job in general to make up for any application's lack of abilities. Isn't the point to try to make a font which works as well as possible for the maximum number of people ? ... and if that means using Contextual ligatures inapp...

Adding Ligatures in place of Kerning.

Many programs don't support Kerning. Most word processors do but not all of them, when it comes to other programs whose primary purpose is not to accurately render text then the chances of it using the kerning information embedded in the font goes down considerably. Programs like ConnectedText, MyIn...

Re: Books i.e. resources for learning font design

'Letters of Credit' by Walter Tracey is an awesome book, not much about computer systems (it's a bit before personal computers) but there is a lot about letter design and spacing of letters.

Re: Books i.e. resources for learning font design

Another good book is 'Letters of Credit' by Walter Tracey. It is very good and has some interesting ideas on letter spacing. The problem is that it is out of print and second hand copies are very expensive on Amazon (£100 to £140). Fortunately there is a 'dodgy' website with a free download of the b...

Re: Sukhumala — A Graceful Font for Body text

Very nice and you know far more about typography than me but ... I thought that the attachment points on the capital i and capital a might be a little wrong. On the 'Polish Diacritics : How to?' website (http://www.twardoch.com/download/polishhowto/ogonek.html) it says :- There are two correct ways ...

Re: Two to try

Once edited (bearing the above in mind), any suggestions where (what I think is) the finished product ought to be posted? Deviant Art is a good site at http://www.deviantart.com/ , you have to register for a free account or you can pay for a 'premium' account, I stuck with the free one http://pjmil...

Adding Anchors to their relevant groups.

It would be nice if whilst I was editing a character and adding anchors to that character I could add those anchors to the relevant groups from within the Anchors dialog box. Anchors which are part of a group already have a link icon before the name of the group in the Anchors dialog box, those that...
