Re: Adding missing characters
The forward slash is not too wide, its too narrow — it has zero width. From the Transform Toolbar (F6) on the bearings tab, set the left bearing to zero and the right bearing to 72 — that's the same as other glyphs. I would have designed the % the same as the other glyphs by copying the zero as sugg...

Re: Adding missing characters
The forward slash "/" exists in the font, so I don't know why you cannot see that. The percentage "%" is absent. To add it using the trial version: Insert Character and select % from the dialogue with double-click. Copy the forward slash to the new glyph with Control C, Control V...

Re: Load a PFM Font for modification
FontCreator supports Truetype/OpenType fonts, not Postscript Type One fonts. Unless it is a very specialised font there is sure to be a Truetype version available.
If it is your own specialised font you could recreate it as Truetype by scanning bitmaps and pasting them into FontCreator.

Re: Are OpenType and budget software incompatible?
There has been a lot of discussion about whether to implement OTF items like hinting. Why have any of those discussions if OTF is off limits? Because hinting is supported by all Windows applications — even notepad can benefit from hinting. This discussion will bear little fruit here because whether...

Re: Are OpenType and budget software incompatible?
It would be better to discuss this on the Serif or OpenOffice forums, because FontCreator is not a word-processor. If OpenType support is implemented in PagePlus X4 (doubtful IMO), or in OpenOffice 3.2 (possible), then would be the time to discuss implementing support in FontCreator. There is also S...

Re: Add OpenType editor
That's a good Keynesian analysis (or is it a Dickensian analysis :) ) — if it was really needed we would have it by now — simple supply and demand. I am inclined to agree. I don't think we will see it any time soon in PagePlus — there is just not enough demand for such advanced typesetting features....

Re: Space bar glyph/character
Glyph $00A0 is the non-breaking space — a fixed width space used to keep words together on the same line. It is often inserted by pressing control + space bar in wordprocessors. That is not the non-printing space character you want, which I think is the middle dot or period centre: $00B7.

Re: Add OpenType editor
It has been requested many times before, but it is not a simple thing to add, and its benefits are dubious. Even after many years, there are still few applications that support OpenType features, and even in those that do, not all users are aware of how to make use of them. This Issue for OpenType s...

Re: Whole font blinks like a christmas tree when...
You might find it easier to draw complex contours on paper and scan them in. Disable real-time glyph validation on the Validation toolbar (F7) that might solve the display problem. I have never noticed that problem, but then I have never tried to draw such a complex contour with the insert contour t...

Re: Font Complexity
Impossible by just measuring variables in the font. You need to test real text samples on real people, with visual impairement if that is your target audience, or on a PDA display if that is your target platform. Just take a look at the fonts that you find easiest to read at the sizes you want to us...

Re: Newby question
Not a lot to add to what William has said — yes, use Unicode and the Private Use Area. You might, however, like to map some at least to Alpha Numeric characters for easier keyboard input, or perhaps you need some text characters that match the symbols? Something to consider. Scan at the right resolu...

Re: Font Complexity
What is the purpose? You can get a good idea of the complexity of a single glyph by looking at the number of nodes and contours in the hintline. That is a good indicator of how quickly the font will be drawn. Very complex symbols can make a font so slow as to be unusable. The file size in bytes divi...
