Hi My name is Don.
I made couple of font with High-logic Font Creator.
but when I type with it I am unable to insert spaces. In other words, nothing happens when I hit the space bar, the words just string together.
I got e-mail from customer service from High-logic.He told me that a space character is missing.
Can anyone tell me how I know there is no a space character?
and how to fix the problem.

Hi Don,
The space icon is the fourth glyph.

Open that glyph and you can see where the glyph bearings are.

Move them apart to make the space as large as you wish.
I have just made a test font, in FontCreator 5.6 actually, including outlines. I then deleted the space cell, saved the font and installed it.
I then tried a test using Microsoft WordPad of 5 digits, a space and five digits, as follows.
01234 56789
When I pressed the space bar, a rectangle with a question mark in it was displayed: that is, the .notdef glyph.
Could you try the following please?
Open your font in FontCreator.
Right-click in the fourth cell in the top line, going from left to right.
In the cascading menu that is displayed, left click on Properties…, so as to display a dialogue panel.
In the General panel, what is the Name please? Is it space?
What values are displayed for Left Side Bearing and Advance Width please?
In the Mappings panel, what is listed as mappings for the Macintosh Roman platform please and what is listed as mappings for the Microsoft Unicode BMP only platform please?

I checked propert section in forth glyph.
It says left side bearing is “0”
Advanced width is “606”
and mapping platforms is "Windows Unicode BMP(UCS-2).
Can youn please help me solve this problem?

I do not recognize that as the mappings platform.
However, I do not know a lot about platforms.
Also I do not have the latest version of FontCreator, so maybe things have changed?

My turn… Advance Width of 606 should be visible, so it must be something else.
When you edit the font in Font Creator is the 4th glyph labeled “space”? When you display the font (Test Font) can you enter and see a space character? If you can see it in Test Font it must be something else.
In FC, if you highlight the space glyph and right click on Properties then click on Mappings tab, does it show the Mapping as 32 Space? If not, you need to add a character to the cell. “Select” and highlight a space and enter OK. Set the Advance Width and it should show.
Is this a Roman-type font? Are you using a standard keyboard? Has the space key been redirected to/from something else? Did you make the font entirely in FC or was the skeleton from another font where it may have inherited some other characteristics?
I already confirmed to Don, the font I investigated does indeed lack a space character. It starts with the 10 digits instead of the recommended four glyphs.
The font wasn’t made with FontCreator, although it is possible it has been changed with FontCreator. Since this font is a Symbol font, the space character should include $F020 as Windows Symbol mapping.
