I’m a complete beginner to font design, so need a little help…
The picture shows a letter I’m trying to create. Ideally I want to have a light grey circle around each letter – how can I do this? If this isn’t possible, then just a circle with a white centre.
Each character is based on parallel lines. I have succeeded in drawing the letter A but the lines are filled, not what I want. How can I achieve the desired effect?

Colour or grey scales are not possible in fonts, (unless you fake it with hundreds of dots). To get a white circle, make two, one slightly smaller inside the other, then change the direction of the inner one. Copy and paste one circle, then scale or resize the inner one using the Transform Toolbar F6).

The good news: I’ve drawn a letter A!
The bad… lots of validation errors, mainly “intersecting contours”. If you look at the image above, the problem is that the design has lots of intersecting lines.
So, is this a problem?
If yes, how do I proceed?
If no, do I simply ignore the error messages?

I suggest you use a larger image (for example 500x500), as explained here:
