I have a font where certain capital letters are too high on the baseline. I want to move the character (glyoh) down. I have looked and looked in the manual and can’t find the info.
I have opened the individual glyph box, clicked on the character and tried to drag it down, but while moving, the weight of certain areas changes.
Can someone tell me how to easily move a glyph slightly lower onto the baseline.
Thanks in advance, Merrill
Some glyphs will consist of more than one contour.
Capital letter A is usually two, B is usually three, while C is only one.
If you just click on the letter and drag it down, you are only moving one contour. Select all and then nudge all contours down together with Control + Down Cursor.
Down will move by 10 funits, Control Down will move by 1 funit, while shift down will move by 100 funits.
Notice that curved letters like C and O should overshoot the baseline, while flat bottomed letters like L or T should sit on the baseline. This will give the best visual alignment. Use the Preview Toolbar (F8) to see the results of your changes.
Hi Bhikkhu,
I want to thank you for responding to my support question. What you say makes so much sense, as when I tried to move the letter C I had no problem, but did have trouble with Y and P. I can’t wait to try what you suggested.
You actually helped me quite a few times when I first purchased this program, about a year ago. You were very helpful and I am very grateful.

I have found moving individual glyphs can be subject to “user error” where they end up “close” to the right place so there are two additional methods which can help move letters around "big"or exact distances:
The Transformer (Tools/Glyph Transformer/Outlines) has a Move function which can be used to adjust an entire font or a selection of glyphs by the same amount vertically and/or horizontally.
Another big help is the Transform tool bar (View/Toolbars/Transform - F6). There is a Position tab which can be used to move a single glyph an exact distance. Note the numbers shown include Advance Width and Left side bearing but you can check the values before you change them (Bearings tab). I often use this before making font metrics changes for misaligned fonts.
Each glyph should still have a final or fine adjustment as Bhikkhu Pesala suggests. Note the “Edit/Select All” (Ctl A) is needed.
