Changing the font size

I followed the instructions on the manual about scanning letter to make your own font. I used 300x300 dpi. The fonts came out to be very tiny.

  1. How can I make it a regular size?
  2. the letters g, y j, hangs above the letters. How can I make to to display properly?

I think the recommended size is about 300 pixels not 300 dpi. The image will only be large enough if the letter that you scan is 1" high. For regular 12 point text, which is 1/6" high at most, you would need to scan it at 1800 dpi to get a 300 pixel high image.

After importing the image, Font Creator traces the outline to create one or more vector contours. C will have only one contour, but A will have two, while B will have three contours. These contours can be selected together and stretched within Font Creator to fit the character cell.

Characters like y should descend below the baseline, while most others will sit on it. Letters like C and O should usually desecend slightly below the baseline or they look too high compared to D or M, which usually have flat bottoms.

Draw yourself some guidelines for x-height, desender, ascender, and caps-height, to make sure characters are positioned and proportioned correctly. If these terms are unfamliar to you, read some of the font tutorials for which you can find links in the specifications forum.

If perfection is not yet achieved, please let me know, and I will update this graphic. I designed it in Page Plus, so I can easily modify it and re-export the GIF image.

Bhikkhu Pesala,

Great illustration about font terms.
