character placement within MS Excel

Hi there,

I want to design a symbol-font with all characters having a circular bound of the same size.
The font shall be used especially within MS Excel, one character per cell.

Now I’m a bit confused on how Excel places characters within cells.
For testing purposes I created a “placement.ttf” for use in “placement.xls” (see attachment).
The testing circle in placement.ttf (mapped to LATIN CAPTITAL O) is 2048x2048 in a 2048 em-Space, TypoAscender 2048, TypeDescender 0, both bearings set to 0.
Within Excel I have set indenting for the cell to top-left, but still my character is not left-aligned.
I tried other things, including smaller circles (with respect to the em-Space), but it’s getting even more weird, since then I cannot understand vertical placement in the cell as well.

Can anyone explain precisely how to set the font/glyph-parameters in order to be able to properly control character-placement in Excel-cells?

Thanks a lot and best regards
Matthias

Nothing wrong with the font, although the right side bearing is not set to 0 but to -256. Other fonts seem to behave the same.

The indent in Excel might have an additional fixed offset (or margin). You should contact Microsoft and ask them for support, as it looks like this is a specific support question related to their software.
