Control Panel "Designed for: Symbols"

Microsoft fonts like Wingdings, MS Outlook and MS Reference show a “Designed for: Symbols” attribute (as well as Category: Symbol/Pictograph) in Control Panel:

What do these symbol-related properties mean? Are they supported by FontCreator?

The attributes seem to be lost after loading and saving the same font again with FontCreator:
WingdingsTest.png
That only thing that was edited before saving was replacing “Wingdings” with “WingdingsTest” under Font/Properties… (Font/Family Name; Instances/> Full Font Name, Unique Font Identifier, PostScript Name).

Symbol fonts are considered legacy, so it has less priority than Unicode fonts. That said, we would still like to fix any issues related to Symbol fonts, but we don’t know why the Sample shows different characters.

On a technical side note; it seems FontCreator 14 has some flaws related to this specific font:

  • It inadvertently messes around language specific naming fields.
  • Non-linear scaling flag (bit 4) is set, but hdmx table is not present

We will most likely fix these in an upcoming version of FontCreator 14.
