copying part of a shape and joining contours

Hi,
Could someone please tell me how to join contours effectively. In order to practice this, I made two rectangles and oriented them to overlap and cross to make an x. I selected one of the points on one rectangle and one of the points on the other rectangle, and then right clicked on the second point and then the rectangles became distorted. Also, there were red x marks at the overlap points. How do I prevent this distortion? What do the red x marks indicate?

Additionally , if I create a shape and want to copy one end of the shape, can I and if I can , how do I do this?

One more basic quesion, please. I have trouble with navigation from the show the points and the selecting the whole shape. I do it by trial and error of clicking the mouse randomly over the window. What is the sequence to turn on and off the select box around the shape and to turn on and off the show all points.

Thank you.

Yes. I had the same problem at first. Erwin is working on a weld feature, but it might take some time to complete.

To make a "t " for example, instead of combining | with - one needs to combine - | - that makes it much easier.

It is very useful to reuse bits of letters with other letters, e.g. to cut off a serif to to join to other letters. That way, all of the serifs are identical. To do this, select two points where you wish to chop off the serif (create extra nodes if you need to), then split the contour. Copy the bit you have cut off to the clipboard, and undo to rejoin the split contour. Paste the contour in the glyph where you want to join it. Use the cursor keys to nudge it into position (you often want to restrain it in the same vertical position).

Add two nodes to the contour where the serif intersects, and delete all nodes beyond that to get a straight line between the two nodes (it helps to cut the serif to the clipboard again to get it out of the way, but in the right position). Then paste the serif again, select two coinciding points on the two contours, and join them. That usally works. If it doesn’t, undo, and try with the other two points.
