I am not sure what i might be doing wrong, but once i have made a font, saved it, and test it, if i need to come back and do some tweaking, when i click to save it, the progress bar goes fast at the bottom, but then, i get the error message “Could not save the font file”. The only way i can save it is with another name.
Is that the normal behavior?
It might have to do with the difference between the font and the file, but i am confused as to what to do.
I realized that i was using an older version of the program so i upgraded to version 8.
Although the message does not appear, i find that i cannot edit the file and save it to use it after. Somehow the saved file does not “update”.
My problem is that i am creating “layered fonts”, meaning that they create letters by overlapping two different segments one by a font #1 and with a font #2, placed on top of each other. Just a couple of pixels for one character will throw out the rest of the text if both fonts are not exactly sized properly.
So i edit one glyph/character to move a segment a few pixels to the left or the right, but when i export it, it does not seem like it has taken the change into consideration.
When i use TheFontThing and the font is visible in the display it is then recognized by Paintshop Pro without having to install it.
It works with any font i need to use but don’t want to install.
Just in case it could help, i tried installing one of the two fonts i am creating. But that either didn’t work or needs more tweaking, however, i cannot find that font anymore in the Windows > Fonts folder to uninstall it. It is hidden? How do i uninstall the font that was installed through FC?
I know many people like that “feature”, but it is actually the cause of many problems as all thise fonts are loaded and will cause conflicts as you describe.
Reboot. Then do not use the font thing. If you prefer to use a font manager we recommend MainType to uninstall the font. But you can easily do this through Windows fonts folder.
I don’t SEE the font in the Windows fonts folder. That is a problem.
And i am not using TFT for installing fonts… only to see them, and when i can see them, then PSP can use them.
In Windows XP, simply double-clicking on the font to make it appear was enough to make it also available in PSP, In W7, that function was lost so TFT was the alternative. I need a free font viewer to recommend to the PSP users. If you know of a free one, please, suggest
The reason Windows stopped using that auto-load feature is due to the fact is causes so much trouble. With tft you only found a way to continue with causing font conflicts.
Yes, i finally rebooted, and was able to remove that file.
However, for future use of FC, what is the best process to do the creating, testing and then tweaking without possibly having to reboot every time? I know that viewing the font in FC is one option but will work only when “single layer” fonts (as i call them) where you can see everything there at once. But if i need to test fonts (even if having to install them for it), when i get back to tweaking it and resaving it, do i need to reboot every time to delete the previous version before exporting/installing the newest? Or is there a way to uninstall from FC?
I haven’t used it since I used Windows XP, but AMP Font Viewer may be more suitable than The Font Thing, which was never updated for Windows 7 AFAIK.
As always, when downloading and installing Freeware, take great care to avoid malware provided free of charge by some download sites, and use it entirely at your own risk. I would also recommend using MainType.
One idea for your layered fonts might be Coloured Fonts. This are, in effect, layered glyphs that can have as many layers as you need. Two might be enough for your stitch hole fonts. Don’t worry that most applications don’t support colour fonts. Testing can be done in Firefox 32, and users will see the coloured glyphs as monochrome.
That confirms The Font Thing is the trouble maker.
Easiest and most effective is probable the Font Test feature within FontCreator. While the dialog is open you can see a temporary font name in the title bar which can be used within all external applications.

I can only have one font visible at the time, so if i need two perfectly aligned fonts, can i use both in a single Font Test window?
Start FontCreator two times so you can have both open a Font Test dialog.
I don’t mind cheating ! but that would still mean two separate windows to test, and no way to overlap, correct?
When i test those “layered fonts”, just a couple of pixels off is a no-no, so that is why i test them in a graphic program, where they would be used (i don’t think anyone would use my stitching fonts in a Word document!)
