creating the bold version of and based on an existing font

Hi everybody,
I just created my first handwriting font yesterday (let’s call it essai-regular) and got it up and running alright. Till then there was no problem. Now I realize that I need a bold version of that font. I know protocol is to create a new font where you name it after the existing regular font, but tick bold instead of font, and using the wizard transformer to bold the entire font. The thing is, my existing font is already too messed up since too customerized, and following protocol would take an eternity. I thought I could make a copy of my existing font, bold it, then save it under a new name (essai-bold), renaming it bold instead of regular with the naming function.
Problem is, when i copy the file essai-bold to the Fonts folder of Windows, I got an error message which went sth like there’s already an essai-regular file in the Fonts folder, do I want to replace the existing file with this new one? (even though I’m perfectly literate and the new file reads essai-bold and not essai-regular) Does Windows just rename the file on its own based on some info i didnt get to modify, hidden in i don’t know which secret corner the new file essai-bold, so that for Windows my new file, apparently named essai-bold, is still the essai-regular in its roots? Could anybody tell me what I’ve possibly missed?
Thanks in advance for your help.

This topic of the user manual should help:
To change the font type (for example from Regular to Bold)…

I’ve already tried that step, what came out was my original font bolded, but that’s not quite what I wanted. I’d like to create a bold sub font of my original font so that when I type sth in Words i can bold it. Any other suggestion?

Font file name and font name are two different things. And no, windows won’t rename your font files names.
