Hi everybody!
I already asked this question in the “Can’t get composite glyphs to work…” topic, but I’ve noticed that things go quicker if you open a new topic
.
Bhikkhu Pesala had a really great idea for making diacritic vowels over consonants. You just set the left bearing in the edit glyph properties panel to -x, where x is whatever you need to get it centered where you want it. The advance width is left at 0. Generally, this is supposed to work fine. I even downloaded the Tengwar font (yes, that’s the one from Lord of the Rings. You can get it at http://home.student.uu.se/j/jowi4905/fonts/annatar.html ), which does the same thing. As a matter of fact, it did work fine for me, too, in the font that I created from a copy of Arial.
Problem is, it doesn’t work when I create a new font, or even when I copy the font that works, then throw out a lot of the glyphs I don’t need. What happens is, when I start moving the diacritic vowel in over the consonant (that is, changing the left bearing to -x), the vowel begins to disappear. If I just shift the vowel to the right of the consonant, it’s still visible. The more I decrease the value, the more it disappears into the void. As soon as I have it over the consonant, it is completely invisible.
Maybe I’m not defining something that I should when I create a new font.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be? What am I doing wrong?
Thanks and Bye
Peter
What program are you having the disappearing diacrit in? If it’s Word, then all you need to do is print. Negative side-bearings get screwed up in Word for screen presentation.
Hi Vanisaac
Sorry, but it disappears everywhere, even in Font Creator in the test panel. I assume there’s something wrong in the definitions, but I can’t be sure. If I just copy an entire font set, it works fine, but not if I create a new one…
Any other ideas?
Thanks
Peter
Can you send a copy of your font directly to me? I’ll see if I can identify your problem.
Thanks for the font. I think the problem will automatically be solved when you use the latest release. The problem is most likely related to the “Set Left Side Bearing at x=0” issue.
Download the latest release through the announcements forum and let us know your results.
Hi Erwin
Well, I downloaded the latest release (4.2.6) and used the fixed version of the font you sent me back, and it works smooth as butter
.
Question: How did you fix the font file? Is there anything I can do to fix the old one, too, or do I just create new fonts with the new version?
Thx a bunch
Peter
The new version will automatically set the Left Side Bearing at x=0. So your problem should be solved even by just opening and saving your font with the latest release.
Hey Erwin
Yup, it worked just like you said it would. I saved the old font file with the new version of Font Creator, and it now works perfectly
.
Have a great day
Peter
