I tried to edit the font “nsimsun_1.ttf” (Chinese character fonts, which you can find in windows with name simsun.ttc) using FC, however, I found that the file size of the edited font file is not reasonable.
The original file size of nsimsun_1.ttf is about 10Mb and I tried to delete the charater inside (all, excpet ACSII character sets) by selecting the character sets and press delete. The final file size is about 3.5Mb.
It is not a reasonable file size for just ACSII character set inside. I tried to use another font tools like Fontlab and do the same thing. The file size became less than 1Mb.
Therefore, I would like to ask, how can I solve this problem? Is there any way to reduce the size more?
Thanks a lot and I am looking forward to anyone reply here.
First of all, make sure you have read the license agreement and the copyright notice before changing a font. Some vendors allow modifications for personal use, so are more or less restrictive.
Most likely the font has some unsupported tables. Those tables are not affected when you change a font with FC. So when you change the number of glyphs (or the sort order) in a font, most likely all unsupported tables are no longer in sync and should be removed. To remove those tables, select Format → Tables and go to the unsupported page.
Do let us know if removing all unsupported tables further shrinks the font size.
