Hi. After I export the font, the appearance appears so bad. I tried many ways to fix the issue but I couldn’t success. How can I fix it? Thanks.
Can you send us the font project files?
Hi. I sent the file.
Can you also send us the exported .ttf file?
The App runs in my work machine. But it doesn’t work in my home machine. Should I setup win11 to run it again. Thanks.
Can you try again? You should be able to use FontCreator without issues as you have a valid license.
I’ve looked into this with your font, and the good news is that there is nothing wrong with the exported file. It is spec-correct, hinted, and it renders smoothly in Word, in browsers and in every other application that uses DirectWrite (which is all modern Windows software).
What you are seeing is a limitation of GDI, the older Windows text renderer that Windows Font Viewer still uses. GDI decides whether it can anti-alias a font based on the font’s overall bounding box, not on the glyph it is actually drawing. Your font contains the Bismillah ligature ﷽ (U+FDFD), which is almost 11 em wide. Once that bounding box exceeds roughly 400 pixels at a given size, GDI switches the entire font to black-and-white at that size. For your font that happens at about 35 pixels per em, which is why 24 pt still looks fine in Font Viewer and 36 pt and up look jagged. This behaviour is independent of the hinting or smoothing settings in the font; I confirmed it by testing your font with hinting removed, with different gasp tables, and finally by only changing the bounding-box values in the font header, which alone was enough to switch the smoothing on or off.
So you have two options:
- Ignore it. Font Viewer is not representative of how the font will look in actual documents, and users will not see this in Word, browsers, or any DirectWrite-based application.
- If the Font Viewer preview matters to you, redesign U+FDFD as a narrower, stacked form. Most Arabic fonts keep it under 3 to 4 em wide. Keeping the widest glyph under about 4 em keeps GDI smoothing active up to 72 pt on a standard display.
Either way, no change to your export settings will affect this.
Thank you very much. That’s true. When I delete $FDFD glyph, the issue disappears. And Font Creator running now.
