Font modification problem

I opened myfont.ttf and Arial.ttf. I then right clicked on the apostrophe in arial and chose copy. Then I pasted in the same spot in myfont.ttf. Now, the apostrophe show in the editor and in charmap, but not when I type in a program such as msword or coreldraw, it shows up blank. I cleared the fontcache in the system32 folder and the office cache as well. any ideas what I am missing?

… any ideas …

Yes. This is a problem that arises often.

The places for the four “smart quotes” as they are sometimes known are all in a new blank font produced using FontCreator so the mapping is already done for you.

You might find it helpful to download a copy of one of my published fonts as linked below and open it in FontCreator and have a look at the smart quote glyphs and notice how they have a “direction-ness” in their design.

If you install the font and type in some text, then hopefully when you type an apostrophe a glyph will be displayed.

If you try your original font in the Microsoft WordPad application, which is bundled with the Windows system on PCs, the apostrophe should appear as you intended as WordPad does not have the smart quote replacement feature.
