When I double-click the actual font file to open the sample page on a WinXP system, all sample pages display the same as the first window open. For example, if I open The ‘Bold Italic’ and leave it open, then open any of the other 3 fonts, it/they will display as ‘Bold Italic’, but with the appropriate font name.
If I close all the windows, the open the ‘Bold’ font first and leave it open, all following sample page windows I open will also read ‘Bold’.
I have verified font settings and verified that all the fonts are checked appropriately (ie, regular, is regular, bold is bold, bold Italic is bold Italic, etc.) and verified the naming, even going so far as to rename the fonts.
I am sure there is something else that I am missing.
The confusing thing about FontView is that if you double-click on a font in Windows Explorer it will display the installed version of the font — not the actual font that you thought you just opened. Maybe only one of the four typestyles is installed?
I have taken the fonts in question, uninstalled them, deleted the font cache file, and rebooted the system.
After this, I no longer have difficulty with differentiating regular and Italic fonts, but there is still a problem with the bold versions (i.e. if I open the bold version, then the non-bold version, both displays record as bold. If I open the regular version, then the bold, only the non-bolded version appears).
I have gone to the Font settings and opened the metrics tab to verify that the bold box is checked in the bold fonts and unchecked in the non-bold versions. When I was done there, I used the auto naming feature to make sure these settings were in the name fields, all to no avail.
That I am now able to differentiate the bolds is a step in the right direction, but I am positive that I am still missing something in the font settings but I cannot find what it is.
These are the first bold and bold italic fonts which I have produced. I produced the bold first and had problems trying to get it to become known to Windows as a bold font. The problem was that although I had set the font as bold in the Font Settings… Metrics dialogue panel, I had not added the fact that the font is bold on the Format Settings… General panel as well.
In the Help system, Contents and Index facility, Index panel, if one searches for Font Type and then clicks on the Display button, the information about what is needed is displayed.
