FontCreator 16 editing page displays an error

Hello, I’m glad to see you released a new version, and I upgraded from 15 to 16 without hesitation, but the results are quite disappointing.

As shown in my screenshots, the left side is the newly released 16, and the right side is 15. Do you understand what I mean by the circled areas? I want to revert to the previous display mode, which clearly showed the relationship between each anchor point. Also, is the white area in the preview mode a bug?

Finally, the shortcut M is the measurement tool. I’d like to ask if future updates could display the width of each stroke in real time. pls

Yeah I have a similar issue on mac version 3061, previously in FC 15 there are grey auxiliary line connecting on-the-curve point to the off-the-curve control point. Now in FC 16 these lines are hidden or removed:

The auxiliary lines help me a lot. Is there an option to bring them back? I don’t mind if they are hidden by default in FC 16 but would be great if there is such option or just revert to the FC 15 behaviour.

I even tried downgrading FC to 15 for these auxiliary lines. But my project, after saved by FC16, can no longer be open by FC 15, as it throws “message should be printed on the main UI thread”.

This option in the top menu bar of FC15 is for displaying the toggle switch; it cannot be found in FC16.

Thank you all for your feedback.

@ynje The next upcoming release will fix the missing outlines issue. See the attached screenshot.

The white area in the preview mode is most likely due to the Glyph outline fill mode, which should be set to Wingding.

We continuously improve our font editor, so do let us know how you think this should work and we will consider adding more metrics related to active/selected parts of the outline.

@convoi from the View menu select Show Connection Lines to toggle between showing/hiding the relationship between nodes and handles.

Thank you. That solves my issue. I am curious: Does that option default to true in FC 15?

Good to hear that solved it.

I believe Show Connection Lines may have been enabled by default in FontCreator 15, but in FontCreator 16 it is now off by default on a fresh install.

Note that when exporting as .otf using CFF/cubic outlines, the same white artifacts may appear as shown when using the Alternate glyph outline fill mode. If you still want to export as .otf, make sure to set the Contours option in the Font Export Settings to Remove Overlap.

Thank you, since you mentioned “on a fresh install”, does it count as fresh install if I drag & drop FC 16.app to the /Applications ? I believe the system preference of FC 15 is still out there and generally I will expect FC 16 to read previous config and migrate settings if applicable.

FC 16 behaves like a clean install on first run, but FC 15 itself and its settings remain intact and unaffected. If you want to go back to FC 15, everything is exactly as you left it.

@ErwinDenissen Thank you. As long as the connection lines are there I am fine with FC 16 and let’s move forward. As a developer I understand the pain to maintain obsolete versions released years ago.

We have just released an update of FontCreator that solves the problem. Let us know your results.

@ErwinErwin Denissen Thank you, I really like the current outline display mode. The thick lines represent the overall outline, while the internal structure is shown with thin lines, which makes the layers very clear. Thank you for your hard work!

Will this suggestion remove the overlapping contour(s) still visible after conjoining contours? A sample from my FCv.16 ongoing project:

The contours have already been merged and now have a gap. I think you need to original glyph outline and then FontCreator 16 can do a successful merge/union.
