FontCreator v6.5: USELESS without font hinting!

I’ve bought sometime ago the 6.5 version of FontCreator Professional edition but didn’t do anything serious until now.
So I just discovered that the fonts created with this software display awfully bad, with rough edges, no matter what smooth settings I choose,
which renders the software useless! Not to mention there is no information in help about what those values are, what is their purpose, application range, use etc.

So is there a solution, or not? Anyone responsible from the FontCreator team to respond?

Overview of Smoothing

Just use the default value to enable smoothing at 9 pixels or smaller. You could try increasing that value to see if it helps.

Upgrade to FontCreator 7.5 to get automatic hinting. If you want to upload your font, and can post a screen shot of what it looks like in the Font Test window with autohinting. Some fonts may be better without hinting, while others may benefit.

I haven’t seen any difference with the default or any other custom value -it doesn’t work at all.

So you’re suggesting me to pay another $120 in order to have that critical feature that should work in the previous version, fixed -even the manual one.
My financial status doesn’t allow me to do that anyway. Thanks for nothing.

Without screen shots we cannot see what you are seeing. Without the font, no one can help you get better results. What OS are you using? What applications have you reviewed the compiled font in?

It could be argued that every time High-Logic adds improvements to one of their applications that “they should back-port those improvements to previous versions.” It is a silly argument. That generally applies to bug that eventually get fixed too late for previous versions but make it into current/future versions too.

But, like I said, without the font for someone still using 6.5 to test it in, no one can help get better results (if possible).

I have fonts (even purchased commercial fonts) made with Font Creator before the current 7 series that do not suffer problems in display on-screen. It is possible.

First of all I want you to know the people who replied so far, all try to help by providing useful suggestions. We from High-Logic appreciate all help we can get, especially during the weekends

Automatic hinting was never part of FontCreator 6.5, and even though manual hinting might be interesting for a specific group of advanced typographers, we have not implemented that. For manual hinting I suggest you take a look at VOLT from Microsoft, but only if you have plenty of time.

Maybe you set your operating system font quality setting to Non-antialiased. Then the issue is most likely solved by putting it back to the default (ClearType or anti-aliased).
