Fonts Created in Font Creator do not seem to kern in Word

So I spent about 3 hours kerning a font in 5.0. Then I checked the results in programs such as photoshop and illustrator. Finally, everything looked just great. It was a modified Italic so it was no easy chore. After it was saved and retested I tried it in Microsoft Word. It showed essentially no kerning. Thinking it might have been a display problem, I printed the results. Still kerning was way off. Is there something simple I’m missing here. Since I’m a new user, not sure of where to go at this point.

Here is a post about how to make optimal use of fonts in Microsoft Word:

It also explains how to enable kerning in Word.

Hi Edwin,
Thanks for the quick response. So as I understand it, when disbributing a custom font that will be used in Word, it seems that there must be a reminder to the user that kerning must be enabled. No other way around it?

The only way round it is to modify side-bearings so that your font doesn’t require kerning. See my post in this thread If your font requires kerning, you will obviously have to advise users that it won’t work in applications that don’t support kerning. The same would be true if you used Open Type features to create ligatures.
