height of fonts

I am wondering if there is an easy way to modify the height of a font. I would like to take an exisiting font, and either make it all a little taller, or probably just make the Capital Letters a little taller. Could someone offer some advice for both of these situations.
Thank you in advance,
Merrill

The same method for both. Use the Glyph Transformer Wizard. Select all the glyphs if you want to transform all of them, select only the capitals (including Æ etc.) if you want to transform only the capitalls.

  • Copy the selected glyphs to the clipboard as there is no undo for transformations, and leave the glyphs selected.
  • From the Tools menu, select Glyph Transformer
  • Clear any existing transformations.
  • Add the scale transformation from the Outlines group
  • Change the vertical value to 110% or whatever
  • Scale around fixed point 0,0 is probably what you want
  • Save the transformation to reuse later
  • Click on OK to apply the transformation
  • Paste the original glyphs back from the clipboard
  • Undo the paste operation. You can now use redo/undo to compare before and after results, and change the transformation value if it is not right.

Having scaled the capitals, you may need to adjust the height of diacritics (accents) above uppercase glyphs like Á. Select the accent in one of these glyphs and note its vertical offset from the baseline in the status line. Multiply that by 110% (or whatever) and set a horizontal guideline at that point.

Recalculate the glyph metrics — Format, Settings, Metrics, Maximum, Calculate.

Hi Bhikkhu,
Thank you again for responding to my email about the height of a font. I tried what you suggested and it worked great. Since I was changing the entire font, instead of copying the glyphs to the clipboard, I just renamed the font Test, and worked on it. I am able to delete this renamed font if I don’t like what I see.
So, here is my new problem. I changed the height with the 110 formula, as you suggested, and it looks great. But 2 of the glyphs, the capital J and capital Y, seem to be geting cut off at the very bottom of the new font. I guess they come down a little too low now that they are taller. Is there a way in the glyph window to raise these 2 individual glyphs up slightly higher, so they don’t get cut off. I don’t want to alter the glyph in appearance, just move the entire glyph up slightly. I tried to play around with this, but do not seem to be successful in figuring this out.

By the way, every time I try to reply to a post I get the error message “Invalid Session. Please resubmit the form”. I have to resubmit over, and over again.

Thanks again,
Merrill

That is why I said:

Post in the Site Issues forum about the other problem, or try using a different browser.

Hi Bhikkhu,
I just posted a reply, but when I looked at the font again, I realize the lower case q and y are also getting cut off at the bottom. I do not want to move the glyphs up higher, as they will not be on an even line when using them.
I am now wondering, instead of moving the glyph up slightly, is there a way to change the glyph parameters to allow a font to go down lower. Maybe one of the guidelines needs to be changed and moved lower, to allow certain glyphs with descenders to come down lower. I hope what I am requesting is coming out clearly.
Thanks, Merrill

Hi Merrill,

I’ve never heard of this issue, but maybe it helps if you first preview your post before submitting it.

Hi Erwin,
I have tried everything with the posting. I try to submit without previewing, and I try to submit with previewing. Each way I still get that same error message. I literally have to hit submit like 20 times, and eventually it goes through. Sometimes I just print my post and try again later, as I get too frustrated with hitting submit over and over.
I wonder if I am the only one that is having this problem…could it be that I am still on a dial-up modem?

FYI…I just hit submit 5 times and am getting that error. Also, although I am logged in, the first time I hit submit it brought me back to the login page.

Maybe your IP address has changed between starting and submitting a post. To find out if this is true, you could visit this website to see your current IP address:
http://whatismyip.com/
Then after a few seconds hit the refresh button to see if it has changed.

If your IP address is indeed changing then this link will explain why you experience the “Invalid session” issue. Unfortunately I’m not able to fix it.

Hi Bhikkhu and Erwin,

First, Bhikkhu…You were right, the third time was a charm. I recalculated and the font is perfect…thank you again.

Second, Erwin…I checked on my IP address, and it does not appear to be changing. Oh well, I will just have to deal with it. I just hit submit about 12 times.

A few minutes ago I noticed you were online so I looked at the Who is Online information. I did notice several visits from similar IP addresses as shown here:

mernjer xxx.xxx.116.135
Guest xxx.xxx.116.5
Guest xxx.xxx.117.67

Since those were the only visitors at that time (me excluded) I really suspect your IP address exposed to the outside does change. Did you see a similar IP address when you visited http://whatismyip.com/ ?

  • To protect your privacy I’ve not shown the full IP addresses.

The IP address I saw was xxx.xxx.117.69

What does this all mean…is there a problem if my IP address changes? I don’t really know what an IP address is. sorry.

I just clickec on that link again, and saw that same IP address as before.

Click the link and then press CTRL and F5 at the same time. That probably returns a different IP address.

Changing IP addresses can give problems when you are visiting websites, forums or stores that use a session to keep track of your identity.
