How to save limited font in trial version 8.0

On your website, it states “The trial version is the full Professional Edition, but it exports only a limited character set of A-Z, a-z, 0-9, which is just enough for testing, but not sufficient to create usable fonts.” I need to test my new font, at this point only even having made the capital letters, but every way I try to export or install the font, it tells me that those features are disabled during the evaluation period. How do I save my font for testing?

You can test your font in the Font Test window. If that window is left open, you can select the FontCreator test font in other applications too. The name of the temporary font installed used for the Font Test window is shown in the Window title bar.

FontCreator no longer exports fonts during the trial period. Where on our website did you read this statement?

That’s what it says on my Review Site, which probably needs updating.

This recent post also gives the impression that the Trial version can create a font with a subset of characters.

That quote was from this page: FontCreator, from which I went to the download page and downloaded the installer.

This is potentially aggravating. I have programs, like Paint Shop Pro 6, which can do funky stuff occasionally (as it has with fonts I downloaded). I chose your software because I thought I would be able to test the essentials directly in the programs that I most need them in. Now, from what I’ve seen during the many hours I’ve used it, your software is good at creating a font, but the final step (saving it for other programs to use) is just as important. I don’t want to pay $80 for a program, do the export, and then out that it’s not going to work.

Also, I don’t understand what you mean by

If that window is left open, you can select the FontCreator test font in other applications too.

I left the Font Test window up, loaded Paint Shop Pro, and a font with my font’s temporary name was not available, either alphabetically, at the top of the font list, or at the bottom.

I’m not sure but I think we changed it when we released version 8.0. It was causing more trouble and confusion.

That post is a year old and refers to FontCreator version 7.5.

Does it now support the full character set in the Font Test Window?

Can users of the Trial version test in other applications with the Temporary font produced for the Font Test window?

No, FontCreator no longer allows you to test the font. The only way to test a font is through the Preview toolwindow.

Actually I need to make one correction. During the trial period you can still test fonts through the Font Test dialog, but during the trial period auto hinting is disabled, and fonts won’t be available for other applications.

Hi. I’m evaluating FontCreator as a tool for my foundry startup. Using the trial software, I’m having trouble knowing what the final results will be. Considering the auto hinting that occurs in a font export, does either the Preview Window or the Test Font window show what the final result will be? As you can see from the attached screen, neither seems very reliable. The Preview window has awkward aliasing and misinterpretation of the stroke weights. And the Test Window has no aliasing. In order to evaluate the software, I need to know exactly how my fonts will display when exported, particularly at small sizes. Is this possible? And does the Preview Window include hinting?

Jim

The preview window has no hinting. You will need a license to really see how an exported font looks.

You can see how any of my free fonts look at small sizes. They were all hinted by FontCreator on export.
