Install Problem

New Font Creator user, having no luck deleting or installing modified fonts despite filename changes with Windows 2000. Error prompt states “The file is probably in use by windows or another application”. Seems to be purely a system issue. Will be grateful for any suggestions. Thanks.

Did you follow the guidelines about removing the original font through Windows fonts folder prior to installing the modified version?

Attempts to remove fonts in the windows font folder result in following error- “cannot delete:access denied. source file may be in use”. Could my system be incorrectly configured somehow?

Even if your system is incorrectly configured, I don’t believe it is related to your font lock issue.

It is more plausible the font file is indeed in use. Especially when you have a document open that uses the font. Several fonts are also used by GUI elements, but those are fonts that came pre-installed with your operating system. So before we continue guessing, it might be wise to tell us the name of the font.

‘Problem’ TT fonts in question include Arial and Tahoma, among others.
Besides trial & error, how can I identify which ‘system’ fonts to avoid?
Is there a way, perhaps, to redesignate which fonts the system utilizes?
Thank you for the tips and help to shorten my learning curve. I like the program very much so far.

I would never try to remove Arial and Tahoma as a lot of software expect these fonts to be available on your system. For example Windows XP uses Tahoma to display text on menu items, list boxes and message boxes. Arial is one of many fonts that can be used to display websites in web browsers.

See these two option dialogs, one of Windows Appearance settings and one of Firefox fonts settings.

All fonts used by your operating system should not be altered or removed. Here are some I can think of: Tahoma, Trebuchet MS, Microsoft Sans Serif, Marlett and probably MS Sans Serif, MS Serif, Courier, System and Terminal. It is also wise to stay away from fonts used by software and documents that you consider important enough. For example a lot of Word documents use Times New Roman, Arial, Verdana and Courier New. A lot of web pages want to show content in Verdana, Arial and Courier New.

Here is a more complete list of font families you should not modify or remove from your system:

Arial (TrueType)
Comic Sans MS (TrueType)
Courier (Raster)
Courier New (TrueType)
Marlett (TrueType)
Microsoft Sans Serif (TrueType)
Modern (Vector)
MS Sans Serif (Raster)
MS Serif (Raster)
Roman (Vector)
Script (Vector)
Small fonts (Raster)
Symbol (TrueType)
Symbol (Raster)
System (Raster)
Tahoma (TrueType)
Terminal (Raster)
Trebuchet MS (TrueType)
Times New Roman (TrueType)
Verdana (TrueType)
Webdings (TrueType)
Wingdings (TrueType)

I am enjoying much better results now, am prepared to ‘fly solo’ for awhile. Thank you very much for your instruction & insights, especially the list of system fonts.
I am also encouraging my colleauges to check out the Font Creator program for themselves.
Best of Luck, Mauler.
