installation

Hi

I wonder if I should use the Font Creator 5.5 installation wizard to install my new font into Windows. I notice a warning against installing directly into Windows in the user manual. What am I missing here?

Thanks in advance.

You should use the Font Installer Wizard to install the font, but you should not save the font file in the Windows fonts folder. Make yourself a new directory to save your fonts for editing, such as C:\My Fonts\ and open the fonts from there. If you’re editing existing fonts, then save a backup copy in, say, C:\My Fonts\Monotype\ before deleting the font from the Windows fonts folder. Edit this copy and save it in, say, C:\My Fonts\HighLogic\ Then install it from FontCreator using the Font Installer Wizard when you have finished. Before updating a font, delete the font from the Windows font folder, and then install the new version.

The online manual says:

In order to install a font we first need to save the file. Select Save as in the File menu and choose the name (for example C:\MyFonts\MyHandwriting.ttf) and destination.

Note: > It is not recommended to save font files directly into Windows Fonts folder.

To make your font available to other applications select Install in the Font menu. The Font Installation wizard will guide you through the installation process.

At the end of the installation process you will be informed that the font is installed successfully. Now you will be able to select the font in any program that supports TrueType fonts.

Hi Bikkhu

Thanks for your reply. I just need to clarify something so please bear with me…You say I should use the installation wizard but not to save the fonts in the windows fonts folder. So I have tried this method and I un-check the box asking me to install in windows and then that same dialogue box tells me which directory it will install the fonts into itself. I have done this and still find the problem of mis-installation. Should I simply install in windows using the wizard and then delete and reposition the file retrospectively? Is that what you mean?

Thanks again.

Bikkhu

I have saved my font file in c:\my font and have tried to use it in photoshop where the text appears in the text layer palette after I click on it and yet it is invisible on the document itself. I am able to easily change font style t any other style and have the text magically appear on the page but when I click back to / select my font the text disappears again. What’s up please?

Thanks in advance

There is no need to uncheck the box in the Wizard. Unchecking the box just means that the font won’t be copied to C:\Windows\Fonts from its current location in C:\My Fonts\ — only the font registry will be updated.

The Help file advised against saving fonts directly into C:\Windows\Fonts,not against installing them there through the font Wizard.

If the font still isn’t working in any application you can send it to me for testing.

Hi Bikkhu

sorry I have taken so long to reply but in the meantime I have done as you instructed - deleted existing font from windows and re-installed my font to no avail unfortunately. That is, while the font is no longer present in windows control panel, it still appears in the photoshop font list yet is still inactive. What now?

Thanks in advance
