Kerning does not show in design program.

A font I have created has about 2400 pairs. The Preview in FCP 3.0 shows the correct kerning, but when used in Corel Draw it is not there. Many of the kerned pairs show, but some do not. Specifficly lower case tc. I have tried to eliminate some of the kerned pairs but it has not helped.
Thank You,
Steve.

I don’t have software from Corel, so I can’t help you with Corel Draw. I wonder if the kerning works with Microsoft Word.

I tried it in Word and the kerning does not show there either. Though the font is incomplete, I would be glad to email it to you if you wish.

Hi Steve,

Yes, do send the font file to me.

I’ve just received the font and did some testing. On my system the kerning does show up in Word. I’m running Windows XP Pro and Word 2003. Did you enable kerning inside your Word document?

I am running Windows XP Home and kerning is turned on in Word. What is wierd is, some kerned pairs work and others do not. Pairs that would be naturaly similar like tc, tg, to and tq. The kerning for to and tq work while the kerning for tc and tg do not. I have not yet detected other pairs that are not working. I have installed the font on two computers and get the same results. I have 4 computers and will try it on the others. It is at least good news that it is working on your system.

I’m curious about the results, so do let us know them. What version of Word do you have?

I did try the font on a third computer with a different design program (FlexiSign). On this computer the kerning for the (tc) pair did work but some others did not. Specifically the (k space) and (r space). In Corel Draw on that same computer the (tc) did not work but (tg) did work which did not work on my first computer. It’s totally baffeling. I am using Word 97 by the way, and have Windows XP Home Edition on all computers. I can only think of one more thing to try, reducing the number of fonts in the Windows Font Folder. I have around 500 to 600 on each computer. Any suggestion at all?

Thanks,
Steve

It is up to the software vendor to implement kerning support in their software. Some applications have limited support and some have no kerning support at al (like WordPad).

I’m not sure but I believe the 3.0 version of FontCreator contained a bug concerning the kern table. Maybe that causes the issue. I’ll send a copy of your font to you, saved with FontCreator 5.5. Do let me know if that solves the problem.

Thanks very much Erwin! That seems to have solve the problem. I will be purchasing the up-to-date 5.5 version very soon.

Steve

I’m glad to know that solved the problem.

I see there is no upgrade from 3.0. Can you tell me the difference between Home and Professional version? Do you take PayPal?

That’s correct. Due to numerous improvements over the years, we can no longer accept upgrades from version 3 to version 5. FontCreator has taken advantage of today’s computer technologies adding many new features (like glyph validation, snap to grid and guidelines, glyph transformations, drawing tools, contour operations and complete composites) enabling you to be more productive and profitable.

Can you tell me the difference between Home and Professional version?

The Professional Edition can save a lot of time, but is more expensive. You can always upgrade later, as the Home Edition and the Upgrade cost the same as a Professional Edition. This comparison chart shows the differences between the Home and Professional Edition.

Do you take PayPal?

I’m sorry but we don’t accept PayPal. Almost all other payment methods are available through Kagi. For more details take a look at our registration page. Looking forward to your order.

Again, Many thanks for all your help. I have downloaded the trial version for now.

Erwin,
Did you do anything else to the font besides just save it in 5.5? I have the trial version of 5.5 and when I save it I still getting the bad kerning.
