kerning in fontcreator

Hi, i’m looking to buy the pro edition of font creator, however I downloaded the trial version earlier and I seem to be having problems with the kerning. I’m going to be creating all my fonts by scanning in images or importing from photoshop. I tried this with 6 letters ABCDEF to test it out. When I installed the font though the kerning was all messed up and the letters were all on top of each other. Is this because I didn’t do the whole alphabet or is this an issue with scanned images? I hadn’t messed around with the kerning defaults at all. I then tried the auto kern feature but it still messed them up when I installed the font.

Would scanahand be better for what I need or am I missing something simple. I’m not too techy minded sorry!

Hi fontjacker

The overlapping of letters generally is caused by not having the advance width set properly. For the entire font easiest way to set it is Tools/Autometrics/>>/Next/Calculated with some values for space before and after characters. This will set left and right boundaries.

You might need to adjust each one individually thereafter based on the design of the letters.

Kerning gives a “fine” adjustment for letter pairs so that, for instance, an A and a V are correctly positioned relative to each other and overrides the left side bearing and advance widths set for the letters.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I’ll give that a try then.

Cheers
