Kerning Preview and Glyph dragging resize

Hey Erwin!

Just thought I’d ask for a couple of additions to an already awesome program.

I’d like to be able to kern all pairs using the preview window in the OTD no matter what order the kern tables are in. So I don’t have to use the proofing tool.

The second is the more important one. When shaping a glyph I’d like to have the resizing (when I drag a glyph from the corner) to have the option to snap to guidelines and metrics. Right now the horizontal and vertical drag does this but the diagonal drag does not. It would save me a lot of time!!! Please!!!

Thanks!!

Blessings,

Jonne

The snapping issue has been brought up before.

If I remember rightly, it is hard to fix. The workaround suggested in that thread works well, especially if you want to fit a glyph to font metrics like x-height. Just enter the height and enable retain aspect ratio on the Transform dialog.

You should be able to do all that. Please clarify what exactly is not working as you wish.

Do you want to it to snap the contour bounding box, or the visual path?

Hey Erwin,

I’m not sure of the terms but I believe the answer to your question is that I wish it snap to the bounding box. For example if I make a horizontal line guideline I’d like to be able to raise or lower a glyph by the corner (to retain its aspect ratio) to the guideline I made. Does this make sense? Thanks for the quick reply both you and Bhikkhu Pesala!

Blessings,

Jonne,

PS - I’ll try to think about how to word my first request better.

Now that I read more about my question in the forums perhaps I don’t wish to snap my glyphs just to the bounding box. I don’t wish to have to make vertical guidelines in what I wish to do. I wish to use just horizontal guidelines to my glyph to while maintaining my glyphs aspect ratio (dragging it from the corner). Does that make sense?

Blessings,

Jonne

Diagonal resizing should snap to both horizontal metrics and guides, and vertical guides.

The bounding box can be bigger than the contour if there are off-curve extremes. I think only snapping to the visual outline would be useful.

Resizing selected contours is always applied on the visual bounding box.

We are am currently refactoring it, so stay tuned for some minor improvements as it should also snap to diagonal guide lines soon.

Make it snappy!

Can we have sound effects, too please?

Yay!!! I can’t wait to get back to work again!!! I’ll be checking for it every day.

Jonne

Here is an update with some improvements related to snapping contours, as it now also snaps to diagonal guidelines. We had to refactor a lot of code, so I hope we didn’t break too much.

Happy testing:
FontCreator 13.0.0.2658 (64-bit)

Snapping by dragging the corner seems to work OK, but snapping to a diagonal guideline only snaps the bounding box, not the contour outline.

Try resizing a letter O, for example, to snap to a diagonal guideline.

That is correct, as it will only snap the bounding box.

YES!!! YES!!! YES!!!

Erwin You did it!

Thank you so much for your awesome and may I say quick work! The program feels so much more powerful now!

I’ll report if I find anything broken with these changes.

Thank you so much!

Blessings,

Jonne

Here is another pre-release:

FontCreator 13.0.0.2661 (64-bit)

It now allows you to transform selected points. Just click one of the selected points to toggle between Move and Scale. We have also updated the user manual, so this one is really ready to go!

Let us know your results.

Looking good. The “t” shortcut still works too, for those who prefer the keyboard to the mouse.
